INTERVIEW: Gustavo Hamer on Middlesbrough performance and securing play-offs

Sky Blues goalscorer reflects on important point...

8 May 2023

Gustavo Hamer gave his thoughts as his 9th goal of the season helped the Sky Blues to a 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough to secure a play-off finish.

The Brazilian tallied 9 goals and 10 assists this campaign, his best attacking returns in a Sky Blue shirt since he joined the club in 2020.

After the game, Hamer spoke to the press:

On the performance against Middlesbrough…

“We started well with pressing. They started quite sloppy, so we were able to intercept some loose balls and we were sharp.

“I think we deserved the lead and it’s a shame they equalised before half-time because I thought we deserved the lead going into the break.

“It was annoying. When you go into the dressing room level its really annoying, but we didn’t give them any chances second half and we did well.

“They are a good side, but I think on the counter-attack we are deadly.

“Josh Eccles gave me a brilliant pass and then I slid the ball into Matty Godden and then the ball landed at my feet, and I just didn’t think, I just got my shot away.”

On clinching a play-off spot…

“Everybody is happy for getting into the play-offs. I think we can be really proud.

“I heard the fans screaming in the 85th minute or so and you knew things were good for us but you don’t give up, you keep going and try and get the win.

“You know you’re in the play-offs, but you still want to win the game for the fans who have made the long trip.

“It’s three more games if we do it. It sounds easy but you have to win those games.

“The possibility of the premier league is there, we’re going to go for it, we won’t give up and we will do what we can.”

On the journey to getting into the play-offs…

“We started with problems, but we still have some because we have some really important players who are injured.

“Everyone is important for us, the injured players, the players on the bench, the backroom staff, the supporters.

“We’re not where we want to be with the whole team, but it’s a great achievement.”

On the feeling ahead of the Middlesbrough rematch…

"I’m not a nervous player before games. I’m doing what I love, and I love to play football, so I don’t feel pressure.

"Luckily, I scored at 1-0 as well, so you could tell I didn’t feel pressure.”

On the support of the fans…

“The fans are amazing. You saw them today they weren’t quiet for a second and they really are amazing.

“I don’t think there will be a single chair free in the semi-finals.”
