Mark Robins led Coventry to the play-offs with a fifth-place finish after the 46 games season. The Sky Blues lost just once in their last 19 matches (W9 D9), a run which started with a 1-1 draw against Luton in February. Luton finished third in the regular season with 80 points, eleven off an automatic promotion spot, ending their campaign with three wins and two draws. The Hatters lost 2-1 to Sunderland in their semi-final first leg, but a 2-0 win at Kenilworth Road in the second leg gave them an 3-2 aggregate win. Luton were relegated from the old First Division in May 1992, a few months before the new Premier League kicked off.
