Three points for the Under-21s...

21 March 2023

City’s Under-21s claimed all three points against an experience Peterborough United side at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The visitors fielded a strong eleven, with all outfield players having represented their first team.

However, City took control of the game and took their chances, racing into a 2-0 lead after goals from Justin Obikwu and Marco Rus.

The Sky Blues picked up where they left off in the second half and were able to see out the game, moving to 6th in the PDL.

The Sky Blues had the best chance of the opening 20 minutes, in what was a tight affair, with nothing to split between the two sides.

That chance that did come, fell to Ricardo Dinanga, as he struck the ball cleanly on the half-volley, but he pulled his shot narrowly wide of goal from the edge of the area.

Dinanga was causing the Posh defence problems and was forcing William Blackmore into action, making the ‘keeper get down well to deny the winger.

At the other end, Peterborough thought they had found the opener, but Emmanuel Fernandez saw his header come back off the woodwork.

Posh would be left to rue that missed opportunity as the Sky Blues would take the lead and it came from Dinanga down the left and he cut the ball back for Justin Obikwu, who slotted the ball past Blackmore to put City in front.

The visitors looked for a response and within a minute Daniel Rachel was called into action twice, first denying Ricky-Jade Jones and then Ben Thompson.

With a minute of stoppage time added on, City doubled their lead and it was an excellent finish from Marco Rus, who got the ball out of his feet inside of the area and found the bottom corner.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 2-0 Peterborough United

The second half began the way the first had ended, with the Sky Blues on top in the game and pushing for another to add to their tally.

Under-21s captain Marco Rus was leading the charge and he went close to grabbing his second of the game, only for Blackmore to deny him from inside of the area.

Peterborough were searching for a way back into the game and they created a chance for Jones, but his shot was straight down the throat of Rachel.

Rus was producing a fine performance and was unlucky not to find City’s third of the game when his shot cannoned back off the woodwork.

Ricky-Jade Jones saw his latest chance sail over the bar a few moments later, this time his header didn’t trouble Rachel and City push forward at the other end.

Dempster’s side thought they had a third when Obikwu went close, firing wide from the edge of the area.

City were able to see out the game to secure all three points. Next up for Dempster's side is another visit to the Coventry Building Society Arena, when they host Colchester United on Tuesday 28th March.
