The Sky Blues have climbed to eighth after storming to a comfortable win over the Terriers...

4 March 2023

The Sky Blues are up to eighth in the SkyBet Championship after storming to a comfortable win over relegation-threatened Huddersfield Town.

Viktor Gyökeres scored twice for Mark Robins' side, either side of the break, with Gustavo Hamer and Tyler Walker also finding the net at the John Smith's Stadium.

The win means City go six games unbeaten in the Championship and have recorded a seventeen clean sheet of the season, all coming with Ben Wilson between the posts, a joint all-time record for a Sky Blues goalkeeper.

City were the first to force an opening, albeit only a half-chance, with Ryan Howley almost making an instant impact on his first Championship start. The teenager played a give-and-go with Matty Godden before crossing in search of Gyökeres, missing his target by inches.

However, Gyökeres did get his goal on the half-hour mark after finding a route behind the Huddersfield defence and lofting the ball over Nicholas Bilokapic. It was a calm finish from the Swede, who still remains firmly in the hunt for the Championship Golden Boot.

Huddersfield responded with an instant effort at Ben Wilson's goal, rifled toward the bottom corner by Scott High, but the goalkeeper pushed the ball wide with a remarkable two-handed save.

Howley, now settling into the game on his debut, came close himself shortly after, turning a defender and curling an effort just over the Huddersfield bar.

However, it was the hosts who looked the most likely to score during the final moments of the first half, with High testing City with efforts from range on a number of occasions.

After the break, City struck early through Hamer. The goal came from some great work down the right from Fankaty Dabo who first won a throw-in before using it to skip inside the find his Dutch-Brazilian teammate in the area. Hamer wriggled inside and found the corner from close range.

From there, the Sky Blues continued to grow and turned their two-goal lead into a three-goal lead just eight minutes later through Gyökeres. The Sweden international once again found himself goal-side of the Town defence and picked his corner expertly.

Then, with seconds left on the clock, Viktor picked out Tyler Walker at the back post and he wrapped up the points with a fourth.
