INTERVIEW: Mark Robins looks back at Huddersfield and talks Howley start

City make it six unbeaten with victory at Huddersfield...

4 March 2023

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins was delighted to see his side run riot at the John Smith’s Stadium, hitting Huddersfield for four.

A brace for Viktor Gyokeres and goals from Gustavo Hamer and Tyler Walker helped wrap up the points and move City to eighth in the Championship.

There were also returns to the side for Fankaty Dabo and Josh Wilson-Esbrand, whilst Ryan Howley made his first league start.

Speaking after the final whistle, Robins reflected on a positive performance, as his side continue to move in the right direction.

Looking back at the win…

“The way we started off wasn’t great. It was sloppy, but with the injuries we’ve had, I had given them some time off after the Preston game to try and get their energy levels back.

“There were some changes and Ryan Howley came in for his first start and I thought he did really well at a difficult place.

“They didn’t cause us too many headaches. We knew how they were trying to play and they were trying to turn in behind and cause us problems, but I think they have some good players and its just a shame they lack a bit of confidence and we looked like we got sucked into that mindset and we had to step things up a bit.

“We spoke about it at half time, we said we could give these a leg up if we’re not careful, so it was important we took the lead and then in the second half we were able create more openings when they were trying to make changes and get back in it.

“Space opened up and when you do that for players that we have it ends with three goals in the second half and it’s what we deserved.

“We deserved the three points and it was good performance backed by a brilliant crowd.”

Handing Ryan Howley a first league start…

“We decided Friday morning. It was something I decided to do. I was going to start a different way but it didn’t feel right, so ultimately it turned out pretty well.

“It gives him that confidence and experience to know what it’s like to play away from home in a difficult environment, playing against the likes of Jonathan Hogg, it was always going to be a difficult ask.

“I thought he stood up to it really well and won some important headers and was tidy with his feet. He just needs to get the confidence from the experience and I’m delighted for him because he deserves it.

“He should’ve been out on loan somewhere, but we weren’t able to do that, so he deserves his chance and he’s been part of a really good win.”

Dabo’s return to the side…

“Fanky was really good. Everything that was asked of him he did well, both defensively and in possession and there was some really good play from him.

“We know what he can do, he’s just been blighted with injury and I’m just pleased for him that he’s had a good performance.”

Aiming for the top six…

“We are light in numbers and we’re going to come up against teams with more confidence than Huddersfield had today, but we’re up for the scrap.

“We have eleven games left and we are looking forward to every game.”
