Sky Blues settle for a draw against Hull...

11 March 2023

City boss Mark Robins was pleased with what he saw from his side in the 1-1 draw with Hull City at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The Sky Blues had the better of the chances in the game and on another day, could have come away with all three points.

However, a goal on the counter-attack, put the visitors in front, before Matty Godden equalised midway through the second half.

Reflecting on the game, Robins identified those chances and how Hull were able to keep out his side, as they were forced to settle for a point.

Reflecting after the final whistle…

“I think we were good from the start. We created the better openings and had more chances to do more with the ball. They defended with their lives, they did not do much with the ball, but we gifted them a goal and went 1-0 up.

“Second half we opened up a little bit. They had a few more opportunities to score which is normal. I am really pleased the way we took the game to them.

“We tried to win it and so did they. We scored a good equaliser through Matty, it was a really good connection at the near post and he dealt with it.

“Overall, I think we take a point and I can’t be too disappointed because we had a good go of the game.”

Not being able to find a winner…

“We are happy with the goal, and I think we had another chance just after it.

“We produced a good ball into the penalty area, but it just didn’t bounce our way. Our balls seemed to hit them, so they did defend well.

“We threw everything at them so I can’t be too disappointed with the team. Although we wanted to try and kill the game off, the big thing or us is to try and score the first goal. If we score the first goal, we win the game.”

On Hull’s defending and treatment of Viktor…

“That was their game plan. They seemed to foul Viktor off the ball a lot, so they found a way of keeping him quiet but then of course the referee has got to see that.

“They are not getting penalised for it because it is off the ball? That is not ideal and not in the rules. When a foul is committed there should be a freekick given. He needs more protection.

“As far as their game plan goes, they have some really good players, and they did well today. Estupinan is a thorn in our side, and he came on and we gifted him a goal.

“It was an excellent piece of skill, but we need to move our feet better. It is disappointing from our point of view; it killed our momentum and the atmosphere but again we did well to turn the game around. Credit the players because they put everything at it but just did not get that second goal.”

Substitutions in the second half…

“We tried to move things around up front, not necessarily just in midfield.

“Ryan (Howley) ran out of legs, and we put Sean Maguire on. He did well to knit and link the play up and there was an intent there to get the second goal.

“Ryan found it tougher today but that is another learning experience for him but we brought some extra legs on, some good pace and extra energy.

“Josh Wilson-Esbrand came on to give us extra attacking threat too.”

Not scoring enough goals this season…

“We have not scored enough goals generally. Last week against Huddersfield we went to town with them and finished off our opportunities which was fantastic.

“We have had a couple games where we have won 2-0 but we have needed more. We need to be more clinical at times and in those final areas. When we don’t, it is frustrating and we need to take those on the chin.”
