INTERVIEW: Justin Obikwu on his goal, victory for the Under-21s and targets for rest of the season

The striker was on the scoresheet again...

28 March 2023

Justin Obikwu helped the Sky Blues Under-21s make it back-to-back wins, with a second goal in as many games for the striker.

Obikwu was on target just after the restart, before then providing an assist for Danny Cashman, to help City take the game away from Colchester United.

The City youngster has been in goal scoring form as of late, as he continues to learn his trade with the 21s, whilst also enjoying a loan spell with North Leigh.

Speaking after the final whistle, Obikwu told how he is looking to add more goals to his game and continue his fine form.

Looking back at the win…

“I think the team did very well as a whole.

“The pressing and start wasn’t as intense as the start, but obviously, as the game went on, the press got better and did the quality and we started to move the ball more and that showed with the two goals we got.”

Linking up with Danny Cashman…

“It was good link-up from me and Danny today. We haven’t played together that many times before, but when we have, I think we’ve linked up well.

“We bounced off one another and he gave me the goal with an assist and then I did the same for him, so it was good to have that.”

Scoring in back-to-back games…

“I’m happy with my goal. I’ve been lacking goals for most of the season, so I’ve been aiming to score as many as I can here and out on loan.

“I just want to match my last game with my contributions. They say you’re only as good as your last game, so all I have to do is keep scoring.

“I want to keep working hard for the team, keep providing and scoring.”

Leading the line for the Under-21s…

“It’s good for me at the moment and it’s a good challenge. Some teams play senior players at this level, and some will field their under-21s, so you come up against something different every game.

“It’s a challenge I have to overcome, and I’ve just been enjoying it and doing well.”

Currently out on loan at North Leigh…

“The loan is a good experience. Playing against a men’s side, it’s more physical, so that helps improve your attributes with that experience.

“It helps get you prepared when you come back to the Under-21s and helps for the future.”

Targets for the rest of the season…

“My aim is to keep scoring. Every game I want to try and score at least one goal and get an assist if I can.

“I can’t stop scoring now, I have to keep going.”
