INTERVIEW: Josh Eccles on search for a first goal and Hull City point

The midfielder helped City come from behind...

11 March 2023

Josh Eccles believes the Sky Blues were unfortunate not to come away with all three points at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

City came from behind to earn a point against Hull City, but had the better chances in the game to find a winner.

The midfielder himself had chances from outside of the area, but he was unable to find a goal and his first for the Sky Blues.

Looking back on the game, the midfielder discussed his search for a first goal and the point against the Tigers…

First half performance…

“First half we had a lot of chances. We had a few shots on the edge of the box, and they made some blocks and there were some ricochets.

“It was quite disjointed, and we struggled to get our feet in first 20 minutes but then I thought once it started raining, we took control of the game.”

Shots from distance…

“They left quite a lot of room on the edge of the box, so me and Gus had a lot of shots, but when they leave space outside the area, it means they have more people in the box ready to block it.

“I need to be more composed and pick out the spaces, but they got quite lucky because a lot of the ricochets didn’t go our way.

“Some days they go your way and sometimes it doesn’t. On another day it can deflect off their bodies and wrong foot the ‘keeper but today it went the other way into the keeper’s hands or for a corner.”

Search for a first goal…

“I don’t know how I haven’t scored this season. I’ve had a lot of chances. I just need to pick out my places to shoot and next time hopefully it goes in.

“I had one today where it curled round the post and I thought it was going in, but I will just jeep shooting and hopefully I get my first goal this season.”

Hull taking the lead…

“Unfortunately, it deflected off Howley and wrong footed everyone in the defence and he got his strike off and put into the back of the net.

“I thought it was a good response from the boys to come back and keep pushing. We made a few changes that gave us the upper hand and we put them on the back foot for the rest of the game.”

Matty Godden finding a leveller…

“Vik is just Vik at the end of the day he does that every week. Then it as nice to see Matty get back on the scoresheet because he’s just come back from injury, and it was nice to see him get his goal.

“We take the point today. We’re still in and around the play-offs. We’re looking up and we’ve got nothing to lose, so we’ve got two games this week so lets see what we can do.”

His run in the team…

“It’s hard for me to get into the team with Gus and Sheaf, who have been outstanding this season, so I’ve just been waiting for chance and hopefully I feel like I’ve took that.

“We’ve been on a run of seven games unbeaten and I still have something to improve, so hopefully we can keep that run going.

“I was hoping last season would be when I broke through, but with the injuries I had it was disappointing I didn’t do that.

“This season I’ve played a lot of games, more than I expected to be fair. I’ve still had an injury this season so I could have played more, but hopefully they’re in the past now and I can keep progressing.”
