INTERVIEW: Chris Allen on Colchester win, Justin Obikwu performance and Cashman's return

Allen pleased with victory...

28 March 2023

Sky Blues Under-21s coach, Chris Allen, was pleased with the way the Under-21s performed in their 3-1 victory over Colchester United.

City rode the storm in the first twenty minutes, before taking the game away from the U’s, with goals from Trialist, Justin Obikwu and Danny Cashman.

A win for the Under-21s makes it back-to-back victories at the Coventry Building Society Arena, as they move to 6th in the Professional Development League.

Speaking after the final whistle, Allen reflected on the 90 minutes, whilst also praising the efforts of the 21s, including that of Justin Obikwu…

Reflecting on the performance…

“Back-to-back wins, we’re starting to like playing here. It started off a bit slow, Colchester, fair play to them, they took the game to us early on an attacked us really well.

“We had a good breakaway goal to change that momentum, it deflected in and from then on, the game changed. It’s funny how a goal can change a game. We started to get a foot hold and after coming back out after the break, we started the second half in the same vein.

“We got that second goal from Justin Obikwu and the lads started to grow in confidence and move the ball around more and play with freedom.”

Justin Obikwu scoring again…

“Obikwu is a big strong boy. He’s raw and he’s still got a lot of movement to go in his journey but he just needs to use his pace.

“He’s so quick and he just needs to keep running in behind. When you have that pace and there’s space in behind, just use it.

“If he adds that to his game and improves a few others things that we’re working on with him then he will be a force to be reckoned with.”

Danny Cashman returning to the Under-21s…

“Danny is a senior professional in essence. He’s stepping back into Under-21s environment, so you expect to him shine and he should shine.

“His talent is unquestionable, it’s just maybe the other bit off the ball that he can get better with, but he’s great for us when he steps in with the group.”

Frustrations at conceding late on…

“Always frustrating to concede. You want to keep clean sheets for the defence and the goalkeeper, so it was a shame.

“But, ultimately it doesn’t take away from the lads performance because I though they did really well, apart from the first twenty minutes.

“They’re always looking to grow into the game and they did that and as I said, it’s a really good performance.”
