TRANSFER: Viktor Gyökeres joins Sporting Lisbon

13 July 2023

Coventry City can confirm that striker Viktor Gyökeres has joined Sporting Lisbon.

The 25-year-old striker joins the Portuguese side following the agreement of a significant undisclosed fee, which is the highest transfer fee ever received by the Sky Blues, plus add ons.

Gyökeres originally joined City on loan in January 2021 from Brighton and Hove Albion. He made the permanent move to the Sky Blues in the Summer of 2021 when he signed a three-year deal.

The development of the striker during his time at the Sky Blues was clear to see and the 2021-22 season saw the striker net 18 goals in 47 games, while a further 23 goals were added last campaign in 50 matches as City reached the Championship Play-Off Final. Including his loan spell, Gyökeres played a total of 116 games and scored 43 goals for Coventry City.

His form for the Sky Blues would see him twice named Championship Player of the Month in the 2022/23 season, as well as earn further international recognition from Sweden.

Everyone at Coventry City would like to wish Viktor the best of luck for the future.

Executive Chairman Doug King said.

"After a long discussion, we have finally concluded a deal that is right for all parties concerned and confirm the transfer of Viktor Gyökeres to Sporting Lisbon.

"Viktor has made a huge impression in his time with us and leaves many great memories and we wish him every success with his new club.

"Once again, the quality of the coaching staff at our club has been showcased.

"This is a record transfer fee for Coventry City but as is normal will be paid over an extended period, with Brighton & Hove Albion taking a meaningful percentage share.

"We have already been active in the market as we rebuild for the new season and will continue to recruit selectively but these funds will also support  the extensive infrastructure projects the club is undertaking."
