Kasey Palmer on target again...

22 July 2023

The Sky Blues were held at Croud Meadow in their second pre-season fixture against Shrewsbury Town.

City fell behind through Ryan Bowman’s strike in the first half, before Kasey Palmer equalised midway through the second half.

Mark Robins was able to hand minutes to new signings Brad Collins and Joel Latibeaudiere, as well as minutes for Gustavo Hamer.

The first chance fell to the Sky Blues when Jake Bidwell’s ball into the box was glanced on by Matty Godden, but he couldn’t steer his header on target.

However, five minutes later, with their first shot on target, Shrewsbury took the lead through Ryan Bowman, after Brad Collins had initially kept out Tom Bayliss’ effort.

City looked for an immediate response and they almost had it if it wasn’t for a fine save from Marko Marosi to keep out Ben Sheaf’s strike from the edge of the box.

Gustavo Hamer was back in the starting eleven and he went close, firing a volley towards goal, which deflected behind for a corner. From that resulting corner, Joel Latibeaudiere headed agonisingly wide.

The Sky Blues had their response just after the half-hour mark when a short corner was pulled back for Kasey Palmer and his effort deflected past Marosi and drew the game level.

Marosi would stop City taking the lead, saving Matty Godden’s penalty five minutes before the break, after Jake Bidwell had been brought down in the area.

HALF-TIME: Shrewsbury Town 1-1 Sky Blues

City made four changes at the break, Liam Kelly, Jack Burroughs, Ryan Howley and Evan Eghosa coming on to replace Gustavo Hamer, Kasey Palmer, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Joel Latibeaudiere.

The visitors came closest in the opening moments of the second half, but Carl Winchester couldn’t keep his strike down, as his shot sailed over Brad Collins’ bar.

At the other end, good work from Eghosa ended with Godden pulling the ball back for Ellis Simms, but his effort was blocked.

Fifteen minutes from time and Bidwell surged forward with the ball, teeing up the on-running Kelly and his thunderous strike deflected inches over the bar.

Collins was then called into action from a counter-attack with Dan Udoh, which saw Winchester try to round the City ‘keeper, but he was equal to it, pushing the ball behind, in what would prove to be the final piece of action at Croud Meadow.
