INTERVIEW: Robins looks back on Forest Green Rovers win and talks transfer recruitment

18 July 2023

City boss Mark Robins was pleased with his sides workout in their 4-0 win over Forest Green Rovers in pre-season.

Ellis Simms bagged himself a brace, whilst goals from Kasey Palmer and Justin Obikwu added to the scoreline.

It was City’s first outing in pre-season and a first glimpse at seeing new signings Simms, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Jay Dasilva.

Speaking on his new arrivals and the latest in the transfer window, Robins provided an update on where City are with recruitment.

Reflecting on the outing at the New Lawn…

“It was a good workout, and we came through unscathed. There was some decent passages of play and some decent goals.

“Ellis got himself some opportunities. Matty Godden’s movement was outstanding, and he was unlucky to not get on the end of one or two and get himself a goal.

“Then in the second half we had some of the young lads and I thought they did really well, and it was a good experience all round for the lads and the youngers lads.”

Viktor Gyokeres moving on and Ellis Simms coming in…

“With Viktor moving on it gave us a chance to replenish and do some things. It’s always been important, and we get a small amount of that to reinvest into the squad and it was needed.

“This division will be the hardest it’s been this season. With the teams that came down it will be like a Premier League 2.

“We have to make those gains as much as we can do and losing Vik was a blow but getting someone in like Ellis is a real coup and he has some brilliant ability and great qualities we can work with. He’s 22 and there’s loads there.

“He experienced the Championship last season and scored goals for Sunderland and to get him is a real coup and a statement for us.”

The Transfer Window…

“The recruitment has been good so far and we still want another ten. Things will start to drop so people should be excited.

“The players are on the list and are moving closer. It’s just difficult to get everything done and over the line.

“Dean Austin and his staff are working their socks off and they’re working round the clock to try and make things happen and for me if we can get the ones over the line I’ve given the thumbs up to, it will make for an exciting squad.”

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s first outing…

“I really like what I see. He’s such a nice and humble person. He’s going to learn English as well.

“He understands it very well, but he doesn’t speak it with enough confidence, but he understands and we’re getting him lessons and I think we will need to learn some Japanese.”

The Under-21s experience with the squad…

“We’ve had the young players with us and it helps their development and there’s one or two that have come through and I like what I see.

“That’s testament to John Dempster and the Academy staff that are working with them.”
