INTERVIEW: Mark Robins on MK Dons, Bobby Thomas outing and Ben Wilson injury

25 July 2023

Mark Robins was pleased with side’s performance, as they hit MK Dons for five in their latest pre-season fixture.

Ellis Simms grabbed himself a brace, whilst Josh Eccles, Kasey Palmer and Bradley Stretton added to the scoreline in the second half.

Speaking after the game, Robins looked back at City’s outing, whilst also highlighting Bobby Thomas’ first appearance and Ben Wilson’s injury.

MK Dons reaction…

“We had to deal with the situation (opening goal) better, the lads ran off the back and Fadz has just caught the back of him, and he didn’t see it. It was a lack of communication and awareness, and we were 1-0 down after a minute.

“We were then passing it ok, and we needed to up the tempo and naturally we played some good stuff around the box but it was just a bit untidy, but then it started to come.

“We got two quick fire goals with some really good play and good balls into the box and Ellis finished them well.

“We made a couple of changes and got ourselves a third with Josh Eccles with a great finish on the edge of the box after getting ourselves down to ten men inexplicably.

“Kasey has come off and nobody has seen it, he thought his number had been called and it hadn’t, so that’s a fine.

“Kasey came back on and got himself a goal which was nice. It was a great finish, with a pass into the corner and then it was finished off with Bradley Stretton and I’m pleased for him being a Coventry kid and Coventry supporter, but he needs to work on his celebration, it was terrible.”

Ellis Simms…

“Ellis hasn’t done a great deal of training and he’s starting to get there, so to get 80 minutes under his belt was good.

“He’s such a good kid who wants to learn. The work rate will come it has to come because we can’t carry any passengers and he will learn this.

“He’s trying and starting to understand. He isn’t the finished article, but he’s so talented and exciting to work with.”

Preparing for the opening day…

“These games are about getting ourselves ready for the opener and we’re still a well away from where we need to be.

“It’s really important from now to the opening game that we’re putting everything into making sure we’re as ready as we can be, and we might be a bit behind, but they are doing as much as they can.”

Bobby Thomas…

“Bobby is a confident lad. There’s more to come from him. He’s not played enough but you can see enough there that he’s a promising player for us but there will be a lot of work done and he needs to learn.”

Transfer window…

“There will be more incomings and were working really hard on that.

“It will be stepped up again this week and we’re starting to drip players in now and we’re pleased with the quality we’re bringing in.”

Ben Wilson’s injury…

“Ben has picked up a back injury.

“On Saturday his back went into spasm so that’s where we’re at, so we didn’t want to risk him. Hopefully he will be ok for Thursday.”
