INTERVIEW: Liam Kelly talks pre-season, first day back and new deal

The captain extends his stay with the Sky Blues...

4 July 2023

Sky Blues captain Liam Kelly was happy to be back at the Lodge, as City returned for day one of pre-season training.

The midfielder begins his seventh season with the Club, having initially joined the Sky Blues back in the summer of 2017.

Since then, City have risen through the Football League, winning the League Two Play-off final, the League One title, and then just falling short last season in the Championship Play-off final.

Ahead of the new campaign, Kelly put pen to paper on a new deal at Coventry City, agreeing a one-year extension.

First day of pre-season…

“It’s been good it’s been nice to get back in and see the lads after a while, even though it’s only been four weeks.

“It’s been a good day and a good first session back and things are moving along nicely.

“It’s been nice to be back in. It was good summer break and it was needed after a long season, but it’s always nice to get back out on the grass.”

Work at the training ground…

“It looks fantastic now and it’s looking like a really good training ground and there’s still more work going on.

“We can’t stop we have to keep moving forward and it will be good for the players here and will be better for the ones coming in.”

Development squad linking up with the first team…

“Coventry has had a tradition of bringing through players through the academy who go on to do well and hopefully we see some of them make an impression on first-team training in the next few weeks and try and make their mark.”

Signing new deal…

“It’s been a great seven years and hopefully we can continue that into this season and have another successful season and keep pushing as much as we can.

“There’s been a lot of success, we would be like to have go on one better last season but in the grand scheme of things it’s another step forward for this Club and for the fans and we have to keep working away and what will be will be.

“If you put in the good honest hard work, then good things will come.”

Looking ahead to next season…

“You always want to test yourself at the highest level possible and play alongside good players, which has been the case here and we’re building another squad for next season and there will be a lot more new faces coming through the door and we’re looking forward to it.

“We have tough run of fixtures to start the season as it always is in the Championship but that’s why you play football for to play against good teams at good ground and we will be more than confident.”
