Defeat for City...

21 January 2023

The Sky Blues fell to defeat at the Coventry Building Society Arena against Norwich City.

Mark Robins’ side found themselves three goals behind after twenty minutes, before Jamie Allen and Kasey Palmer struck to reduce the deficit to one.

However, Kieran Dowell extended the Canaries lead midway through the second half, in what would prove to be the final goal of the game.

The opening exchanges of the game saw the visitors sneak ahead and it was from a corner whipped into the box, which Grant Hanley managed to get in front of Jake Bidwell and convert past Ben Wilson.

That lead was doubled a few moments later when the Canaries raced through on goal and the ball was pulled back for Onel Hernandez, who found the back of the net.

City went close to pulling one back minutes after Hernandez’s strike, as the Tim Krul’s clearance went only as far as Gustavo Hamer on the edge of the area, but his shot was saved by the ‘keeper.

Wilson was called into action at the other end, getting down well to his right to deny Josh Sargent’s strike from the edge of the area.

Things would get worse for the Sky Blues, as this time Sargent didn’t make the same mistake and he made it 3-0.

Mark Robins’ men would pull one back on the 20 minute mark when Kasey Palmer’s ball into the box was headed back by Bidwell into the path of Jamie Allen, who fired the ball past Krul.

That lead was halved five minutes later when Brooke Norton-Cuffy picked out Viktor Gyökeres with a superb ball into the box and the Swede took a touch and Palmer ran onto the ball and unleashed a thunderous strike to beat Krul from the edge of the area.

With five minutes left of the half, City pushed to find an equaliser and they went close through a Palmer again from distance, but his shot went narrowly over the bar.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 2-3 Norwich City

Following the restart, the visitors came closest to finding the next goal in the game and a second for Hernandez, but he was denied by the post from inside of the area.

Norwich were able to extend their lead and it came from substitute Sam McCallum, who picked out Kieran Dowell and he drilled the ball past Wilson.

The City ‘keeper produced a fine stop to deny Wagner’s side extending their lead, standing up to tall to stop Teemu Pukki adding a fifth.

City were close to pulling another one back when Jamie Allen had a chance from distance, but his shot went agonisingly wide of goal.

Space opened up for Ben Sheaf with a minute left on the clock, as the midfielder fired over from distance and would be City’s last sight of goal, as they suffered defeat to the Canaries.
