REPORT: Sheffield Wednesday U21s 0-1 Sky Blues U21s

16 January 2023

Danny Cashman's stunning solo goal helped the young Sky Blues to a deserved 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday U21s on Monday afternoon.

John Dempster's side put in a strong performance at a snowy Look Local Park, the home of Stocksbridge Park Steels, to return to Professional Development League action with a win.

The game's winning goal was scored by Cashman, who had only recently returned from a loan spell with League Two side Walsall, and saw the winger show true skill as he skipped past multiple defenders.

City started the better of the two sides, creating chances for striker Harrison Nee with balls over the top of the Wednesday defence.

Ryan Howley was finding space in the midfield to help control the game, while Danny Cashman and Will Bapaga were causing problems around the edge of the area.

However, the first chance of the game fell to full-back Josh Reid, with the Scottish youngster trying his luck with the outside of his left boot from the corner of the area. That shot fizzed just wide.

Nee was presented with a golden opportunity to find the net just before the break. His chance came from impressive work from Will Bapaga to drive City forward. He then found Josh Reid, who crossed in search of the head of Nee with his effort being stopped by Wednesday goalkeeper Jack Hall.

At the break, City made a change with George Burroughs being replaced by Aidan Finnegan, who moved in to partner Ryan Howley in the middle while Callum Perry reverted to defence.

The game's opening goal came shortly after, thanks to a stunning solo goal from Cashman. The young winger, who had only recently returned from his loan spell with League Two side Walsall, twisted and turned between defenders before rifling an effort into the bottom corner.

City had plenty of chances to get a second, so often from the good work of Reid on the left-hand side of the field, all while they continue a strong defensive performance.
