INTERVIEW: Mark Robins talks takeover, transfer window, Josh Eccles and Burnley

13 January 2023

Mark Robins address a number of topics in his pre-match press conference, including the completion of Doug King’s takeover of the football club.

The City boss revealed he was with King when he received the phone call that the deal had been completed and gave an insight into his reaction.

There was also a latest fitness update on Tyler Walker and Matty Godden, as well as Josh Eccles, who put pen-to-paper on a new deal earlier this week.

On Doug King’s takeover completion…

“He’s really enthusiastic. I was actually sat with him when the call came through and to see his reaction was really nice, he was really excited. He is excited, motivated and that’s brilliant for me. It reinvigorated everything.

“Doug, meanwhile, is driving things forward, which is fantastic as well. There’s a lot of positivity and we’ve just got to move through this period and make things as straight forward and as positive as we possibly can.

“One thing I will say, people think when there’s new ownership that we have loads of money now and we’ll spend it all but that is not going to happen. What we do have is more stability and control we will continue to do things incrementally as we have done before

“We can’t go and throw the kitchen sink and things and people need to understand that. We have a rich history, and the supporters are the main constant, and we have to look after that, whilst taking things forward as quickly as we can in a sustainable way.”

Challenge of facing Burnley…

“I said it the other year about Norwich being the best team to play in this league, but now I think Burnley are special. They’re one of these sides who have quality throughout the side, and they have a depth to them.

“They don’t have many injuries and they have a real strong pool of talent, and they play in a way which is relentless.

“They try and put you under enormous amounts of pressure and we have to stand up to that.

“We won’t have Jonathan Panzo tomorrow so things will have to change slightly for us.”

The January Transfer Window…

“I said that I wanted more players because were numbers down. Todd Kane has now left, he’s gone to Charlton because he needs to play, so we are at net one player up at the moment.

“There are talks ongoing today about somebody else going out the door, which really needs to happen, but timing is everything.”

Latest Injury update…

“We need to keep working toward what we’re working towards whilst bringing some numbers in. I also have Josh Eccles, Matty Godden and Tyler Walker back on the grass so they’re making progress.

“Hopefully in the next few weeks they’ll be back in training and I’m looking for a game maybe where the Preston game would have been to try and do something.

“But I have to look at that sensibly with how recovery is going and hopefully if everything goes to plan, they’ll be really close at that stage.”

Josh Eccles agreeing a new contract…

“Josh has signed a new deal, which is a brilliant piece of business from us.

“That’s been an on-going thing, which was shelved at the start of the season, and we’ve had patience from both him and his agent on that.

“Josh has been really good but it’s really unfortunate that he’s picked up this injury, damaging his ligaments when we went inside to the dome because of the cold.

“That was a big blow and is a big blow as he had been playing really well. The fact that we’ve brought in another player there adds quality and support means we can push him forward and gives us another midfield player with quality.

“He’s versatile and he’s come through the academy system, which is credit to them as well and credit to him for the hard work he’s put in and I look forward to working with him closely in the future.”

Welcoming Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Josh Wilson-Esbrand…

“People will have seen more of Brooke. He was at Lincoln last year and Rotherham earlier this year. We looked at him in the summer.

“He is a young player who is very highly thought of at Arsenal. He is powerful, quick, direct and he still has things to learn, like everybody, but he’s a really good addition to us and that also allowed Todd to move on.

“Josh Wilson-Esbrand is going to be a special talent. He has some bedding in to do, and he knows Callum Doyle which is a good thing. They’re good personalities, they’re ready to go and they’re excited. Now it’s over to them.”
