INTERVIEW: Maguire on targets for the season, settling in and fitness

27 January 2023

After completing his move from Preston North End on Thursday afternoon, Sean Maguire spoke to the press for the first time.

The striker spoke about how the deal came about and his future targets of extending his stay with the Sky Blues.

Maguire told how he had settled into the squad and how much he was looking forward to his first piece of action against Huddersfield Town tomorrow afternoon.

The short-term deal…

“I think that’s a good thing. You need to go into training every day fighting and that’s what I’m going to be doing.

“It’s a short term deal, but I want to be here for the long term and earn my spot. Whenever I get the chance to put the jersey on from the manager I will have to earn that next contract and that is what I will be looking to do.”

Versatility in the attacking positions…

“I suppose a good few years ago I would’ve just seen myself as a striker, but I’ve changed my game in recent years.

“I played over 170 games for Preston, but I would say most of them I didn’t play as a striker, I was a winger or a number ten.

“I can play pretty much anywhere in the front three. I’ve had discussions with the manager about what he wants from me and I’m really excited.

“I feel like I have a point to prove, not just to everyone else, but to myself because the last year-and-a-half I haven’t reach the expectations I have on myself.”

Fit and ready to go…

“It’s been a different season for me. First pre-season game I was ruled out for 12 weeks, so I missed the first ten games.

“Then I got back fit and got back in the team and started a few games, but then, for whatever reason I haven’t been involved, but I’ve been training and I’m fit and available.”

Looking forward to playing in front of the Sky Blue Army…

“I’ve had some discussions with some of the boys. I’ve seen the average attendances and it’s a pretty good size in terms of crowds.

“Every time I played Coventry at Deepdale they always brought thousands and they always have good support and hopefully I can give them something to cheer about.”

Who he knows already at Coventry…

“I know Ben Sheaf. When I was at West Ham, he was a couple years younger than me and we lived in digs together.

“I’ve known him since I was 18 and any time I’ve seen him we always chat so it was nice to come in and see a familiar face that you know.

“I know Jake Bidwell as well from plying against him and chatting to him in the summer and in terms of the rest of the boys, I’ve played against them a couple times over the years so you get to know each other.”

How he would describe himself…

“I’m a bit of everything I get the bets out of the other players around me. I’m good on the ball and technically very good.

“My goal scoring form hasn’t been great recently, but hopefully getting back to enjoying football, that confidence will come back, and I can get back to where I was.

“I’m strong, and I’m quite good in the air and I’ve been in the Championship six years now, so I feel I know the league as well.”
