INTERVIEW: Josh Wilson-Esbrand looks back on his debut and recovering from injury

21 January 2023

Josh Wilson-Esbrand made his debut for the Sky Blues in defeat to Norwich City at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Wilson-Esbrand was introduced into proceedings midway through the second half, with the Sky Blues trailing 4-2.

The substitute appearance was his first in Sky Blue after joining on loan from Manchester City last week.

Speaking after the final whistle, he spoke about the fans, what he can provide and how the squad has helped him settle in…

On his first appearance for City…

“It was good to get some minutes in the legs. I have just come back from some minor niggles and injuries this last week, so it is good to get some running in the legs and good to see the stadium and fans.

“The atmosphere is amazing. The stadium is not full of course, but even the fans that are there are great.

“You would not think the stadium is not full. It is very loud, and they get behind the players well. I cannot wait to get back out there.”

On this new challenge in his career…

“It is going to be good for me to get minutes here and in the Championship.

“It is underestimated by many people but I know it is a very hard league. It will be great to constantly be playing men’s football week in week out and getting used to the repetitive nature of the league.

“Not just on the pitch, it will do me good physically and mentally.”#

On what the manager expects…

“They want me to be me. They know the qualities I have; they want me to bring a tempo to the games.

“They brought me here for a reason so it is all down to me now to be confident and show what I can do.”

On what he can bring…

“Composure on the ball. I try not to feel the pressure too much, so I do not panic and just release the ball quickly.

“I like to beat players and be smart with the ball whilst also not overdoing it. I try and use the ball the best I can, use my teammates and keep that flow.

“I am a competitor. I am a winner, so in addition to just getting minutes I think the team should be focussed on getting points and making the play-offs. I don’t see why we cannot do that, it is very achievable for us.”

On Callum Doyle’s role since he arrived…

“I know him from the youth setup at Manchester City, but everyone has helped me settle in, they have all been great. It has not been hard to climatize here at all.”
