ACADEMY: Gary Mills reflects on Under-18s 1-0 victory over Peterborough United

The Sky Blues youngsters make it back-to-back wins...

13 January 2023

Gary Mills was pleased with his side, after they overcame difficult conditions to come away from Peterborough United with a 1-0 win.

Aidan Dausch scored the only goal of the game, as Mills continued his winning start to life as Under-18s Head Coach.

Win over Peterborough builds on the 3-0 win over Wigan Athletic last week, as the 18s move up to 5th in the Professional Development League.

Speaking after the final whistle, Mills gave his thoughts on a resolute performance…

Reaction to victory over Peterborough…

“It was a really tough game. The conditions were tough, against a really well organised and coached Peterborough team.

“We had to show real resilience and real togetherness and show good quality in the moments which they were presented.”

Aidan Dausch being the match winner…

“It was the kind of goal I want my number nine to score.

“It was a corner into the box, and it’s ricocheted in the box, and he’s managed to get a toe to it, and it’s found the back of the net.

“He was in a position in the box where number nines will get around ten goals a season and it was a real poacher’s goal.”

Playing to the conditions…

“It was difficult conditions to be honest. The pitch was really bobbly, and the wind was causing us havoc.

“The lads had to earn the right to play their stuff and they did that and showed some really good moments in the game.”

How it’s been since his arrival…

“It was really good; the lads have been fantastic since I’ve come in and they’ve really bought in to what we want to do.

“I can’t speak highly enough of everyone at the football club, the staff and the players.

“They’ve really took on the game plan and understanding of what we want from them in and out of possession, which is good for their development.

“It’s really important we built on the win last time out and we showed a different side to ourselves this week.”

The Under-18s featuring for the Under-21s…

“The lads that get given opportunities and they have to try and take it.

“I was at the game against Coleshill on Monday and the 18s were involved did really well and hopefully they will get a few more opportunities from now until the end of the season.”
