Viktor fires City to three points...

14 February 2023

Viktor Gyökeres’ incredible strike secured all three points for the Sky Blues at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

In a game which City were in control of from start to finish, it was the Swedish striker who eventually broke the deadlock midway through the second half with an unstoppable effort.

The striker’s 14th goal of the season helped City climb into the top half of the Championship.

It was a bright start from the Sky Blues, as they created an opening with just a few minutes on the clock, as Gustavo Hamer’s corner into the box was met by Kyle McFadzean on the half-volley, but he couldn’t direct his strike on target.

Five minutes later, the Sky Blues caught Millwall on the break and the charge was led by Kasey Palmer, who slid the ball in for Viktor Gyökeres, but he was denied by George Long.

The Swede was causing the Lions defence problems and from outside of the area, he shifted the ball onto his right and curled the ball inches over the bar.

In almost a carbon copy move, it was Palmer who was next to cut in onto his right, but his low-driven strike went past the post and behind for a goal-kick.

Millwall created space down the right-hand-side through Danny McNamara, but his cut-back ultimately led to a Sky Blues counter-attack, with Palmer finding Viktor’s run, but his shot was saved by Long back onto the Swede, with the rebound rolling agonisngly wide.

The visitors had their first attempt on goal in first half stoppage time, but Zian Flemming’s free-kick went over the bar.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-0 Millwall

Kasey Palmer tested Long minutes in the second half, coming onto a lay-off from Jamie Allen and placing the ball down the throat of Long, only for the ‘keeper to make the stop.

City were pushing for an opening goal and Vik was looking to force his way through the Millwall back-line, but he was denied with a shot inside of the area, as it came back off Jake Cooper.

Gyökeres wouldn’t be denied a second time and he took it upon himself, beating his man and unleashing a thunderous strike from 25 yards out, leaving Long with no chance and putting City in front.

At the other end, Ben Wilson was called into action for the first time, being alert to keep out Charlie Cresswell’s header from a corner.

Moments later, City had Luke McNally to thank, after he was on the line to make a superb goal-line clearance to deny Oli Burke’s strike from close range.

The visitors applied the pressure late on, but were unable to break through City’s defence, as they recorded a 14th clean sheet of the season and wrapped up all three points.
