REPORT: Sky Blues U21s 2-0 Birmingham City U21s

28 February 2023

Coventry City Under 21s came away with three points after an impressive 2-0 win over Birmingham City at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Tuesday afternoon.

John Dempster named a young side for the encounter but they battled and largely dominated the game at the Arena, with goals from Harrison Nee and Marco Rus securing the win in the Professional Development League clash.

The opening fifteen minutes was a balanced affair, with neither of the sides able to gain the advantage in terms of chances or possesion in the local derby.

The Sky Blues however carved open the first chances of the match, with Tom Costello and then Harrison Nee both seeing efforts go over the bar after good work down the right wing.

It was Nee, deployed in centre midfield, who was the next man to test the visitors defence when the Blues had to react quickly to close down his edge of the box effort and deflect it just wide for a corner with 33 minutes played.

Nee's next effort did breach the Blues backline, but his low shot from 25 yards out saw the visiting keeper get his body behind the ball to keep the scores level going into the half-time break.

The Sky Blues started the second period brightly, Tom Costello almost breaking the deadlock immediately. After 55 minutes, the hosts again broke well down the right hand side through Eghosa but when the ball was pulled back at the byline, Rus' effort only sailed over the bar.

Coventry's defence was well organised and had restricted Birmingham City to few chances, but the hour mark saw left back Batanwi make an excellent last ditch tackle to thwart a Blues attack.

That intervention proved vital, as the Sky Blues would break the deadlock within a minute.

Harrison Nee, who looked dangerous all game, played a one-two on the edge of the Birmingham box and hits a low shot into the corner of the net to put the hosts ahead with 62 minutes played.

That sparked a reaction from Birmingham City, which would see them hit the bar through substitute Adan George's volley on 79 minutes as they looked to find an equaliser.

However it was John Dempster's side who would get the next goal to seal all three points for the Sky Blues. With 80 minutes played, the ball broke to Rus on the right hand side of the visitors penalty area and he finished cooly to make the score 2-0.

The Sky Blues saw the game out for the final period to maintain their clean sheet, capping an excellent performance and three points for a young Under 21s team.

Sky Blues XI: Dan Rachel (GK), Riccardo Dinanga, Tristen Batanwi, Callum Perry, Isaac Moore, Evan Eghosa, Marco Rus (C), Aidan Finnegan, Harrison Nee, Tom Costello (Bradley Stretton, 73'), Will Bapaga (Aidan Dausch, 83').

Subs: Charlie Manners, Eliott Betjemann, Oliver Berry.
