Sky Blues hit two for the win against the Black Cats...

25 February 2023

Goals from Jamie Allen and Viktor Gyokeres sealed a 2-1 win for the Sky Blues against Sunderland to extend their winning run to three games.

Viktor Gyökeres' cut back found the feet of Jamie Allen who stayed composed to slot home for the lead.

Gyökeres sealed the deal in the final minutes, tapping home from Matty Godden's square ball for all three points.

City came out the blocks flying with Kasey Palmer skipping past his man but firing wide of the mark.

The Black Cats came down the other end, moments after, shifting the ball from left to right before teeing up Trai Hume whose effort was palmed out for a corner by Ben Wilson.

From the following set piece, Danny Batth leapt highest and headed his effort onto the bar as the sides continued to trade chances.

Jamie Allen broke the deadlock for the Sky Blues with Luke McNally winning the ball superbly before Viktor Gyökeres broke down the right and found Allen for the close-range finish.

Gyökeres went close to doubling City’s lead twice before the half. First, beating a swarm of men and striking narrowly past the post before a deflected effort skipped past the other on the verge of half-time.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 1-0 Sunderland

The visitors carved out the first chance of the second period when Patrick Roberts cut inside and drove a low effort towards goal but Wilson put out a strong hand to deny the winger.

Gustavo Hamer tested his luck for the Sky Blues on the hour mark but his shot from distance was blocked and the lead remained one to City.

Set pieces proved to be The Black Cats' threat time and time again with Batth popping up again to force a finger-tip save from Wilson.

In the dying minutes of the game the Sky Blues broke through for their second goal with Gyökeres finishing off a fine team move set up by Hamer.

Sunderland grabbed a consolation at the end through Amad Diallo but the points were City's.
