The Sky Blues have beaten Rotherham United at the AESSEAL New York Stadium...

18 February 2023

The Sky Blues have beaten Rotherham United at the AESSEAL New York Stadium thanks to goals from Jamie Allen and Viktor Gyokeres.

Coventry's number eight scored his fifth goal of the campaign, after some impressive work from Kasey Palmer and Jake Bidwell, moments into the second half.

Then, three minutes into injury time, Gustavo Hamer intercepted a loose pass and found Gyokeres and beat his man to fire home and confirm the three points.

The hosts were the first to pounce with the Millers forcing the ball into the net early on, only to see referee Keith Stroud chalk off what would have been the opener due to a foul in the build-up.

City soon grew into the game, however, with Callum Doyle creating the best chance of the early phases with a precision ball over the Rotherham defence to Viktor Gyökeres. The striker turns but could not find an angle to pull the trigger.

Gustavo Hamer, who was presented with his SkyBet Goal of the Month award for January prior to kick-off, also came close from range inside the opening 15 minutes but was unable to prevent Viktor Johansson from making the save.

Rotherham captain Oliver Rathbone was next to threaten the Sky Blues net when his strike from just outside the penalty area whistled over Ben Wilson's crossbar, although the number 13 appeared to have it covered.

Millers forward Jordan Hugill also came close with a header from close range, saved by Sky Blues stopper Wilson.

The second period started in far sharper fashion for the Sky Blues, with Jamie Allen handing City the lead just 100 seconds after the restart. Kasey Palmer and Jake Bidwell linked up expertly down the left to cross to Allen who, after taking a touch, poked the ball past Johansson.

City had the chance to double their lead then minutes later when the Sky Blues broke free from defending a corner. Hamer carried Mark Robins' side all the way to the edge of the Rotherham penalty area and slotted a pass into the path of Gyökeres, who saw his effort saved.

Rotherham set about finding a reply and came close just after the hour mark through Tariqe Fosu. The midfielder watched as the ball bounced into his path from an attacking set piece but struck his effort wide.

Each and every Millers attack opened an opportunity for the Sky Blues to counterattack and Gyökeres once again found himself presented with a chance to double City's lead with 15 minutes left on the clock - but he fired wide.

The Swede would make no mistake with his next opportunity, as Hamer latched onto a loose pass in the middle of park, charged forward and picked out Viktor and he beat his man before firing past Johansson to confirm the points.

The result means it is back-to-back wins for City, following their Tuesday night win over Millwall.
