PREVIEW: Sky Blues host Sunderland at the Coventry Building Society Arena

Mark Robins' side take on Sunderland for Saturday's early kick-off...

23 February 2023

The Sky Blues are back at the Coventry Building Society Arena for an early kick-off against Sunderland this weekend.

Meet the Black Cats:

Sunderland are back in the Championship this season for the first time since 2017 after winning promotion from League One last term.

The Club found themselves down in the third tier after suffering back-to-back relegation from the Premier League and Championship and struggled to immediately bounce back

Since then, the Black Cats have moved into play-off contention and have set their sights on promotion back to the Premier League.

Their defeat last time out against Rotherham United has slowed their progress but a win over the Sky Blues could move them as high as fourth.

However, a win for City and Tony Mowbray's side will feel Coventry breathing down their necks in the top six race.

Sunderland will be without injured top scorer Ross Stewart. His void has been filled by Leeds United loanee Joe Gelhardt.

And they boast plenty of attacking threats from elsewhere, including Manchester United loanee Amad Diallo.

Inside the Sky Blues camp:

Mark Robins has said: "They're above us in the table and they're not too far outside the top six. If we can get a result it lifts us closer to them, and then we're a lot closer to those top six places ourselves.

"I think it is going to be a really good game of football tomorrow. They have got a really young squad with very few players over the age of 30. They're an incredibly talented group.

"They have improved during January by signing Joe Gelhardt but they also have Patrick Roberts and Amad Diallo, who has made a big difference. Daniel Ballard was also a very good signing.

"They play some really good football and it will be a good match tomorrow. It will be tough for both games but a good game of football."
