INTERVIEW: Viktor Gyokeres talks solo strike and Millwall win

14 February 2023

Viktor Gyokeres scored a sensational goal to secure all three points for City at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The Swede scored his 14th goal of the season and his first league goal of 2023, as he helped City move to 11th in the Championship.

Looking back after the final whistle, Vik gave an insight into his strike, as well as the importance of keeping clean sheets to help win games…

On his match winner…

“It was a good goal, I have not watched it back so I do not know if it was better than the Wigan one. But it was a nice one

“Callum was driving forward with the ball on the left, I came towards it and he passed to me. I turned inside past two defenders and shot. It was a good strike and it went into the bottom corner.

“It was a great hit. I had a good chance in the first half after a few minutes when the goalkeeper came out quickly. It is always nice to score when it is still 0-0. It was important to get the first one in the game and keep that clean sheet.”

Chances to score more…

“He came out quite far and it was a bit too close to me to do anything else so I just hit it.

“Obviously, it bounced back off me and I saw it go wide a few inches. Unlucky.”

On the habit of him scoring and the team keeping a clean sheet…

“It would be nice to do this every game.

“It is very important to keep a clean sheet and score as well. We have done this before and when we do it, I think we get better results. It would be nice to stick to that.”

Millwall’s pressure…

“I saw (McNally’s clearance) it and remember him clearing it.

“I am not sure if it was on target, but he was there. We defended well and that was an important moment.”

City’s form…

“We have not picked up as many points as we would have wanted recently but it is good we are getting people back from injury. We have earned a good number of points in our last two games so we have to keep going.

“We are looking at the situation game by game and we need to win as many games as possible and see how it goes.”

On Kyle McFadzean’s return…

“He was really good today. Solid and calm and doing the basic things right all the time. He is very important for us.”
