INTERVIEW: Mark Robins talks Viktor, Millwall win and Godden update

City beat Millwall 1-0 at the CBS...

14 February 2023

Mark Robins was delighted with the way his side fought to come away with all three points against Millwall at the CBS Arena.

City scored the only goal of the game through Viktor Gyokeres, who produced a moment of magic, unleashing a 25-yard strike into the bottom corner.

The win moved City into the top half of the Championship, building on Saturday’s point against Luton Town.

Looking back after the final whistle, Robins gave his post-match reaction, praising his side and also providing an update on the fitness of Matty Godden…

Reflecting on the performance…

“It was a really hard-fought win and we were made to work hard. We started brightly which was really important, certainly after Saturday.

“We showed some really good quality, and they couldn’t to get to us. I thought the back-line was very good and in possession I thought we did okay.

“We created some really good opportunities, one where we countered and Kasey broke away and Vik covered ground and it was like watching Liverpool last night, but the ‘keeper has made a good save.

“Whilst we had the possession and they weren’t able to impose their game on us and if you give them too much, then they’re like Luton, they play with some good quality and play with a good shape. They have some good players who work you hard - but we were good value for the win.

“We needed a really good team performance and a clean sheet wins the game, that’s what Adi said before the game and at half-time as well and it proved to be the case.”

Defending their threat from set-pieces…

“We started well and limited them to bits and pieces. Ben (Wilson) did well and made some good saves.

“We knew nearly half of their goals come from set-pieces and they made us work hard. They sent out a directive that they wanted to bring towels, I think to get in our heads, so to keep a clean sheet was good and important and we managed to stop that set-piece threat on the night.”

Performances on the night…

“The goal that won it was sensational and there are so many players who deserve credit.

“Kasey Palmer was brilliant, so too was Gus, Jamie Allen and Josh Eccles as well. Just looking at it some things Josh did, he looked a little rusty at times but he did some really good things.

“Jamie Allen runs his socks off, Gustavo Hamer was incredible. The lads at the back too were remarkable.

“Brooke Norton-Cuffy did well. He is only 19 and it’s all about confidence. He’s had a tough start to the season with Rotherham and he makes some mistakes, but he needs that arm round the shoulder and the more you encourage these young players, the better they do.

“It was a good performance form him today and he deserved the encouragement he got from his support and he deserved the round of an applause he got.”

Vik scoring for the first time in seven…

“He didn’t care (about not scoring). Viktor is very singled minded, and everyone loves him, he knows that.

“He puts the work in, and everyone wants to swap shirts with him during the game, I think. He gets fouled so much and that shows you what people think of him.

“When you can finish like that, you need to think again. That was some finish. He has earned the praise he gets. He’s a specimen, he’s incredible. He can still get even better too.

“He’s power and his performances everyone is in awe of what he does, he’s incredible, he’s a proper specimen and he’s worked hard to get to that.”

Godden injury update…

“You couldn’t write it.

“Matty has picked up a calf strain, but it is not too serious. He should be back for Sunderland.

“I need to take responsibility for that. We needed him on Saturday, but he had not played for three months.

“He could be back sooner than that. We initially thought the injury was cramp but this morning we have found a really low-grade tear.”
