INTERVIEW: Mark Robins reflects on West Bromwich Albion defeat

Sky Blues boss gives his verdict after 1-0 defeat...

3 February 2023

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins gave his assessment as his side fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against West Bromwich Albion.

Grady Diangana's goal gave West Bromwich Albion an early lead, that they maintained to the final whistle to secure all three points.

Talking to the assembled press after the game, Robins gave his thoughts on:

On the performance against West Bromwich Albion...

“We could’ve come away with some points but I’ve got no complaints with the result. It was the start of the game that cost us.

“We’ve got some young players and are playing against a quality side and they added it in the window, they have ready-made Championship players and some who have played in the Premier League, so we know what we’re up against most of the time.

“The mentality wasn’t right, allowing a team whatever the quality is to dictate to us and we have to change that and it’s difficult with young players but we’ve got to try and change that.

“We went into half-time 1-0 down, everybody in the wrong places and nobody was ready to go and head the ball away and then all of a sudden there's a slot and then Brooke [Norton-Cuffy] is on his heels and lets him get inside and I think it was Luke [McNally] that missed the header and then they tapped it in.

“The mindset change was to be more aggressive with our movements and better with our passing because we were poor, right from Ben Wilson giving the ball away at the start and there were too many turnovers.

“We were in the ascendancy for a while and then, for whatever reason, we gave them more of the ball and they penned us in for a little while because of the quality they’ve got but we looked like we could’ve got back into the game and to answer your first question I’m disappointed we haven’t got anything from the game."

On the missed chances...

“Viktor has had some great chances, the one in the first half that went just past the post and he didn’t quite get onto it and then the one in the second half where he’s chopped into it and missed the target and when you’ve got few chances you’ve got to hit the target, if he does then it’s in the back of the net because he’s hit it so well.

“The first chance was in the first half when Gustavo [Hamer] found Jamie Allen and the ball got reversed out to Brooke and that was the chance for Vik."

On the second-half changes...

"They were coming after us with a decent press, so plenty of learning from a game we found difficult in the first half, changes came in the second half and I thought we were the better team in the second half and I thought we were the better team then.

“That’s what you want, the subs to make an impact. We needed that importance to build that pressure and they did that, and it came from Wilson-Esbrand and he put a good ball up for Josh Eccles and it was a great bit of play and you want more of that.

“The changes made an impact with Josh Eccles, Josh Wilson-Esbrand and Matty Godden coming on but the ball that Wilson-Esbrand stood up for Eccles at the back post I expected him to hit the target, minimum, but he dragged that.

“We were in really good positions and then we let them build which is the biggest disappointment of the night."
