INTERVIEW: Mark Robins looks back on Rotherham United win

18 February 2023

City boss Mark Robins was delighted to cap off a three-game week with a 2-0 victory away at Rotherham United at the New York Stadium.

Jamie Allen and Viktor Gyokeres scored the goals to secure the points, as City made it back-to-back wins, following victory against Millwall on Tuesday.

The win also brought City’s and Ben Wilson’s 15th clean sheet of the season and Gyokeres’ 15th goal of the campaign.

Speaking after the final whistle, Robins gave his assessment of proceedings at the New York Stadium.

Reflecting on the afternoon…

“Good performances all round. Two brilliant goals. The second half was really good, and we limited them to nothing. They’re a difficult side to play against, especially as a third game in a week.

“I thought we managed the game pretty well. I thought Brooke Norton-Cuffy, coming back exercised some demons for himself. He had a tough spell towards the end here, but I was really pleased with him and he’s mentality was good, especially after getting a booking so early on.

“I thought to a man we stood up to they physical challenge which was what you have to do against them. They play in a way which makes it difficult for you but we’ve had good practice against the other two teams we’ve played.

“To come away with seven out of nine points is really pleasing. The backing was ridiculously good and it was amazing I thought it was a really good day.”

Rotherham’s goal ruled out…

“You could see there was foul and we had it confirmed with our feed in the dugout and you could see it with the naked eye that there had been a push and it was just whether the referee and the linesman were going to give it.

“The flag went up really quickly and there was the only time they put us under any pressure. I thought from set plays we defended pretty well and I’m delighted with that and with the result and performance.”

Scoring after the restart…

“We spoke at half time and we said it was a case of upping it a bit. We’re asking for more from them all the time and they played the other night and recovery should be there but if there was a hangover from the midweek game we got it out system straight away.

“I thought we were really good second half and the move down the left was outstanding. Jake Bidwell looked calm and in control and Jamie Allen’s run through the gap was outstanding as well and he managed to flick it in.”

Viktor scoring late on…

“Vik almost got in a few time before he got his goal, but the move for the goal was brilliant.

“Like we said before, Gus had the breakaway and he just overhit the pass for him and the goalkeeper came out and smothered him, but that one there was no mistake.

“I’m really pleased. He’s taken it because he’s shown down that left hand side and he’s hit it with his left and put it in the far corner and that’s killed the game.”

Jamie Allen’s performance in the side…

“He can knit things together when he’s a bit higher and he scores goals and contributes goals. He scored a brilliant goal against Norwich City the other week. but he creates things as well and a bit more belief.

“He finishes really well and he’s got a very good technique and he makes brilliant runs as good as anyone in the division and he found the space at the start of the second half and he found the back of the net which is what we needed to settle things down.”
