INTERVIEW: Jake Bidwell on draw at Preston and 500th career appearance

The Sky Blues left-back made his 500th

Sky Blues defender Jake Bidwell says he was delighted to have made his 500th career appearance at Deepdale but was disappointed not to see his side take all three points.

Bidwell and Jamie Allen both came close to finding the net in Lancashire but City were forced to settle for a point.

Discussing the result, and his career milestones, Bidwell said:

On the draw with PNE…

“It was a tough game. Obviously, to come here in the week, it has been a long way to travel for the boys and the fans. It has probably shown at this stage in the season where we are at, there was not much quality in the game.

“But I think it is a decent point, to carry on our unbeaten run as well as a clean sheet. A few positives and I think all-in-all a good point on the road.”

On the team’s good recent build-up of points…

“It keeps the unbeaten run going as well as a clean sheet. It was disappointing to concede late on at the weekend.

“At times I think it shown at this stage in the season, there were some tired legs on both teams tonight, but we take the point and move onto Saturday.”

On his chances in the game…

“I am disappointed with the one in the second half. I should be at least hitting the target so I am disappointed with that. But as a wing-back I am trying to get into those positions and add a few more goals before the end of the season.

“There is a lot to be done on the training ground.”

On that sixteenth clean sheet…

“We have a real togetherness in the squad which really helps. It is not just the back five it is a team effort and you could see tonight how hard the team worked from front to back.

“It obviously gives us a chance in games when we are not at our best like tonight. It is a good tally and hopefully more to add before the end of the season.”

On Preston managing Viktor Gyokeres…

“They doubled up on him. That is nothing towards Vik, the season he has had, he is allowed a quiet game. I still thought he was a threat to be fair.

“But I have said before, we need to add goals from other areas. We cannot rely on Vik every Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday. It is a big shift and mine was probably the best chance tonight and I should at least hit the target.

“He has been brilliant for us so he is allowed a quiet-ish night, if that is what it was.”

Jamie Allen coming off early tonight…

“He is a warrior, he will not come off for no reason. Hopefully, it is not too bad and we will know in the next couple of days.

“He has added goals recently and is a massive player for us so hopefully it is not too much of a bad one, after losing Kasey [Palmer] at the weekend too. We could do with everyone back as soon as possible.

“The gaffer has said all season everyone is going to be needed and that was shown tonight. Tyler [Walker] and Jack [Burroughs] coming on, they have not had that many minutes lately but they came on and put a shift in.”

On making his 500th club appearance…

“I am delighted with that. When you start it all out you are just hoping to establish yourself and play games really, so it was not something I have really aimed for.

“Luckily for me, I have stayed fit for almost all my career so it is nice to get that 500th before the age of 30. Hopefully, another few more hundred in me left!

“I dislocated my shoulder at QPR but that is the worst injury I have had. It knocked me out for just a couple weeks, so it is partly down to luck I think.

“I just want to keep contributing to as many games as I can and hopefully, I have plenty more years left in the tank.”
