INTERVIEW: Gustavo Hamer on Luton Town and his season so far

Gustavo Hamer says he remains confident that the Sky Blues can force their way into the SkyBet Championship's top six before the end of the season.

City will tomorrow take on Luton Town and the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday (3pm) as they look to reduce the six-point gap that has built between them and the play-off places.

Speaking to the media on Friday, Hamer expressed his delight to have already chipped in with five goals this term and praised himself for having drastically improved his disciplinary record, having now gone 19 games without being booked.

On last weekend's defeat against West Brom...

"It was frustrating. We couldn't play the football we wanted to, which was frustrating, especially as a 5ft midfielder.

"We took some positives from the game, especially in the second half, but I don't want to look back too much because tomorrow is a big game for us and we need to concentrate on that.

"We need more consistency but I also think that we have done quite well given that our team has had a lot of injury problems.

"We've been without Kyle McFadzean, Liam Kelly, Callum O'Hare and so many others. They're all so important for the team.

"When we're fully fit, we'll achieve even more, and we're already doing alright."

On the absence of Kyle McFadzean, who is nearing his return...

"I think that he is one of the best defenders in the division. You really miss him in the big games, especially during set pieces.

"I think the defenders have done really well without him at the back, which is good to see. They are all so young and they have performed well.

"I don't know what it is about Kyle. I think he has magnets in his head because he always heads the ball away when it comes into the area."

On the young players around Hamer in the side...

"They're young players and they're very good. They're from Arsenal, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest, all raised in really good Academy sides.

"They're all good players and they will get better with experience. They're doing a really good job at the back."

Discussing his own season...

"I am now 19 games without a booking, so I am pleased with myself in that way! Just kidding!

"I am playing a lot of games at the moment and I think I am doing alright, otherwise the Gaffer would substitute me.

"I am happy with how I play and with how the team plays. We always try to play football and we don't force it.

"I always want the ball and I feel my personal game has been good so far this season."

On his own discipline...

"I spoke to the Gaffer about it and we have worked on it. He sent me some clips to learn from, especially after the Birmingham red card.

"I have seen how to change the challenges and improve in that way and I think I am doing alright."

On his recent goals, five already this term...

"I have been trying to do more finishing drills because I want to score more and more. I want that in my game.

"It's not my main job, however. It's not why I am here. I am here to balance things and play with those around me. I try to get the team playing.

"It's Viktor [Gyokeres]'s job to score the goals but I am always happy to help out with that and I work on it a lot in training."

On Luton Town and what he expects...

"I think they're going to press us as they are a really good pressing side. However, if you can get through that press you can have success.

"I remember Ben Sheaf's brilliant pass against them in the reverse fixture, that half-kick was a joke of a pass and that is what I mean, if you can get through that press then we can use our pace to cause them problems.

"We have some really good players with brilliant ability. I always say, I think we have the team to get into the top six and I still believe that.

"We're a team who wants to play football and we're good at it, one of the best at that. I am looking up the table and we're only six points away."
