INTERVIEW: Callum Doyle looks back at Sunderland win

25 February 2023

Callum Doyle was buzzing after the Sky Blues made it three wins on the bounce with victory over Sunderland.

Doyle helped play his part as goals from Jamie Allen and Viktor Gyokeres helped see off the Black Cats.

Speaking after the final whistle, Doyle spoke about the Sky Blue Army, Sunderland win and the current run of results…

On the victory over Sunderland…

“It was a good win, we were unfortunate to not get the clean sheet, I know Ben (Wilson) will not be happy at that one. But yeah, it was a good win.

“When it came to 80 minutes, I was feeling a little tired, so the gaffer seen that and brought me off. Obviously, I was there to cheer the lads on and seeing the opposition goal go in was disappointing.

“I think the whole squad played well throughout the game which is good to see.”

On the home crowd…

“It was a really good atmosphere today they were brilliant. They got right behind us, especially before the second goal went in. It was great to see from the bench. I am sure they will bring more Tuesday, they always do.”

On the recent form…

“We have found our rhythm now. Last week we had three games to play so that was hard on our legs so having a week to prepare for this game was good for us. It has paid off.

“It is really good getting these points, it is a definite plus especially if we are pushing for play-offs. We just need to keep going.”

On facing his former employers…

“They were a big part in the start of my career last season, so it was nice to see them but it was also nice to get the win too.

“I was getting tired a lot last season so this time I need to manage that better this time around.”

On his development at City…

“Working with Adi (Viveash) day to day has improved me massively. So has Fadz (Kyle McFadzean), just watching him play and speaking to him after training has helped me a lot.”

On the defending…

“The press we do does not always work at times, but it was finding the balance between pressing and sitting off because they had a lot of possession.

“They switched the ball well so it was hard to get the press right.”

On the second goal…

“As I was off the pitch, seeing the goal go in it was relaxing for me. But then when they went up the other end and score it was a change of mood.

“It was good to see Matty Godden back on the pitch again, grabbing an assist for Vik. Viktor scoring again is of course a plus.”
