On Thursday 23 May 1985, the Sky Blues welcomed Luton Town to Highfield Road for a crucial late-season meeting with the Hatters that promised to help decide the fate of their top flight status.
With so much riding on the fixture, Coventry City opted to replace their ball boys with youth team players, in order to ensure the ball was returned to the pitch at the earliest opportunity.
City pushed hard for the victory that they needed to survive the drop but, despite a loud penalty appeal from the home fans, were made to wait until the 84th minute for Brian Kilcline to rifle home from the edge of the penalty area.
The full-time whistle was met with jubilant celebrations from the Sky Blue Army. Their team had survived relegation and would go on the lift the FA Cup just two years later.
Sky Blues team that day: Steve Ogrizovic (GK), Micky Adams, Stuart Pearce, Ian Butterworth, Brian Kilcline (C), Trevor Peake, Kenny Hibbitt (Micky Gynn), Lloyd McGrath, Terry Gibson, Cyrille Regis, David Bennett.
