Sky Blues Under-18s were held to a 1-1 draw by Crewe Alexandra on Saturday following a performance that coach Gary Mills says left much for his young players to learn from.

City took the lead through a fine Charlie Manners goal before being pegged back by a late equaliser and forced to share the points.

"It was a disappointing performance as the lads fell below the high standard that they set for themselves, individually and collectively," said Mills.

"That can happen with young players, and it's our job as coaches to show them how and why things aren't going to plan.

"It's great for their learning. They are developing. We were too passive and we didn't get close enough to players.

"We also didn't combine well enough. That's all part of the learning and we will work on it all and try to improve these young stars."

"Charlie took his goal really well and it was just a shame that a lapse in concentration cost us. I am far more disappointed about the performance that I am by the result."

Despite that performance, there were still positive to take for Mills and his young group.

"We had a 16-year-old playing the full 90 minutes for us on Saturday, and another Under-16s player coming on at half-time," he said.

"They both did really well and they made a real impact on the game, which is really good for them and their development.

"With a number of our Under-18s players stepping up to the Under-21s in recent weeks, we have spaces in our group for younger players, which obviously creates a pathway for them."
