REPORT: Sunderland 0-3 Coventry City

Three points on the road for the Sky Blues...

23 December 2023

The Sky Blues ran riot at the Stadium of Light, making it a memorable final away day of 2023.

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto got the goalscoring underway just before the break and after the restart Callum O’Hare and Kasey Palmer added to the tally.

City make it four unbeaten in the Championship as they head into Christmas with three points against the Black Cats.

The first chance of the game fell to the hosts and it was a golden opportunity for Abdoullah Ba, as he was the first to react after Brad Collins had kept out Jack Clarke’s strike, but Ba fired over from close range.

However, a minute later and the Sky Blues were denied by a double stop from Anthony Patterson, with the Black Cats ‘keeper denying Haji Wright’s header and then Callum O’Hare’s strike inside of the area.

A clash of heads between Trai Hume and Ben Sheaf five minutes before the break led to the City captain’s departure, being replaced by Josh Eccles.

The Sky Blues would make the breakthrough just before the half-time break. Haji Wright rolled his man, and the ball broke for O’Hare and he picked out Tatsuhiro Sakamoto at the back post and he beat Patterson to make it 1-0.

The Japanese international could have had a second after the restart, but his long-rage strike deflected off Dan Ballard and went behind.

HALF-TIME: Sunderland 0-1 Sky Blues

Sunderland started the second half brightly and their threat was coming down the right-hand-side through Patrick Roberts and Abdoullah Ba, with Roberts picking out Clarke at the back post, but his shot was straight at Collins.

At the other end, Sakamoto cut in on the right and looked for a sight at goal, but he couldn’t direct his strike on target.

City would double their lead after the hour-mark when O’Hare latched onto a Wright cutback and fired the ball into the top corner.

That would be Callum’s final involvement, as he was replaced by Kasey Palmer, who would score with his first touch after coming on, pouncing on a loose ball and converting it past Patterson.

The Sky Blues would see the game out to wrap up three points on the road.
