Defeat on the road for the Sky Blues...

2 December 2023

City fell to defeat against Ipswich Town in Sky Bet Championship action.

Two goals in the first half for the hosts ultimately secured the three points for the Tractor Boys, despite a late goal for City through a Brandon Williams own goal.

The Sky Blues fell behind early on at Portman Road, as a ball through the defence released George Hirst and he latched onto the ball and beat Brad Collins, finding the bottom corner.

Ipswich could have doubled their lead ten minutes later when a ball over the top was brought down by Nathan Broadhead, but through on goal, he pulled his shot wide of goal.

At the other end, City’s first attempt came from a set-piece, as a corner whipped into the box by Josh Eccles was met by the head of Liam Kitching, but he couldn’t direct his header on target.

City were pushing to get back on level terms, forcing Vaclav Hladky into a superb stop, as Jake Bidwell’s half-volley from the edge of the area looked destined for the top corner.

A few moments later City thought they had their leveller when Haji Wright headed home a Yasin Ayari ball into the box, but the linesman’s flag was up for offside.

Five minutes before half-time, the Sky Blues were 2-0 down. Wes Burns cut inside from the right and with the outside of his boot, he bent the ball into the top corner, leaving Collins with no chance.

HALF-TIME: Ipswich Town 2-0 Sky Blues

Mark Robins made three changes at the break, bringing on Joel Latibeaudiere, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Matty Godden, as City looked to get back into the game.

It was one of those substitutes who had City’s first effort in the second half as O’Hare found Godden in the middle, but his first-time strike went wide.

Another opportunity presented itself to City, this time a corner from the left by Bidwell was met by Bobby Thomas, who glanced a header wide of goal.

The Sky Blues were given a chance to pull one back after being awarded a penalty when Sakamoto was brought down in the area. Godden stepped-up to take the penalty, but his strike came back off the bar and Ipswich were able to clear.

Collins was called into action at the other end, producing a fine stop to deny Massimo Luongo’s strike from distance.

City would half chances through Ellis Simms and Joel Latibeaudiere late on, before a Brandon Williams own goal provided City a consolation.
