Haji Wright’s second half strike was ruled out by Sam Edozie, as the Mark Robins’ side were forced to settle for a point at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Wright struck minutes into the second half, latching onto a Callum O’Hare through ball and firing past Gavin Bazunu.
However, the Saints levelled the game 20 minutes later through substitutes Sam Edozie, to snatch the points away from City.
The Sky Blues started the game on the front foot, finding space down the channels through Haji Wright and Ellis Simms.
However, it was the Saints who would create the game’s first opportunity, as a cut back for Adam Armstrong looked destined for goal, that was until Bobby Thomas threw his body in the way to make an important block.
There was another block at the other end, this time preventing Haji Wright from testing Gavin Bazunu, as the American had worked his way into the box and just as he got a shot away, it was blocked by Kyle Walker-Peters.
The game’s best chance to that point fell at the feet of Jamie Allen and the midfielder carried the ball forward and unleashed a strike at goal, narrowly firing wide.
Seconds before the break, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto skipped past Scott Armstrong and picked out the run of Ellis Simms and the striker forced Bazunu into a smart stop.
HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-0 Southampton
After scoring twice last time out at the Coventry Building Society Arena, Callum O’Hare came within inches of making it three in two games, but he was denied by the crossbar from just inside of the area.
That pressure finally paid off when City took the lead in the 50th minute. Callum O’Hare won the ball back in the Southampton half and he released Wright, who cutback onto his right and smashed the ball past Bazunu to make it 1-0.
Collins was called into action for the first time in the second half, reacting well to keep out an Armstrong strike from distance.
Southampton were back level five minutes later. A ball into the box from Ryan Fraser was flicked on by Armstrong into the path of Edozie and he found the back of the net.
The visitors then almost took the lead when Joe Aribo tried his luck from the edge of the area, but his shot went wide.
Armstrong then went closer himself, turning in the box and clipping the top of the bar with a shot from close range.
City had a chance to win it five minutes into stoppage time when Kasey Palmer found Ben Sheaf in space and he was denied by an excellent stop from Bazunu.
