INTERVIEW: Bobby Thomas on his first goal and Leeds United reaction

The defender was on the scoresheet at Elland Road...

16 December 2023

Bobby Thomas scored his first goal for the Sky Blues, as his header helped City earn a point away at Elland Road against Leeds United.

The Sky Blues had to fight for their point against a Leeds side who are unbeaten at home since their relegation from the Premier League.

Speaking after the final whistle, the defender looked back at his goal and the performance against Leeds.

Reflection on the point…

“A hard fought point at a good place against a good team. I think the last two games are pretty similar Southampton and Leeds.

“I think the Southampton game was a little bit more controlled and the Leeds game today was a bit more erratic, it's a lot more end to end they are patient but the not as patient as Southampton and they stretched us quite a lot but then I think that worked in our favour quite a lot as well because we had chances to make the game at times.”

Leeds applying pressure offensively...

“Yeah, most of the players were Rutter, Summerville, Piroe they were all getting in tough little pockets where we’d try and get Joel and Sheafo to try and put the fire out and give us some cover, but I thought the game plan was really good, worked well.

“They had a good period of sustained of possession within the first 20 minutes of the second half maybe first 15 where they got the goal. They had so many times to break us down it was almost inevitable how deep we were and made a change a little bit after the goal you know after being one nil down and got not much else to lose. We ended up being in a different situation where we got after it and changed the game flow and managed to get a nice goal."

On the goal and driving forward with the ball...

“I went on the run didn't I, Adi was saying we were seeing who could carry the ball further, but it managed to lead to a good goal and find the side of the goal. It was just nice to score, I haven’t scored all season, so it was nice to get that weight off my shoulders and try and get a few more now.

It's just what the game presents sometimes, sometimes you see it sometimes you don’t, and you've got to recognise it and recognise that the right spot and Tats has put a wonderful ball in the and it was easy for me to attack and got in front in of the centre half or whatever it was and see the ball go in the back of net. It was nice to give the fans something to cheer about from the good support they bring.

“It's always nice to score I got a few last year and it's took me 20 games to get my first, longer than I'd have liked but it's nice to get the first, hopefully takes the pressure off and just go attack a bit more now try and get a few more similar to last season.

A change in tactics during the game

“It's not just the 11 that started you know the squads really strong at the moment.

"The gaffer changed it up from the game against Southampton, everyone's in contention and everyone's performing well so it's nobody's t-shirt at the moment.

"I thought that when we when we did change it up, we had a couple more chances to nick it as well but it's not just about starting 11 today, the whole squad was terrific and people that come on knew the roles knew their jobs and finished the game off strong and helped us get a point."

City’s chances during the game…

It was a nice move for Kasey although it didn't really come off too clean and then Milan had a nice cross into Cal it went to the side by the goal. Another day we come out two but another day we might lose. I think we'll be happy with the point because it was well worked for and quite a neutral game in the end.

Middle of the season and starting to put together a run

“Fingers crossed you don't know what's gonna happen I think we started the season pretty slow were playing alright football, just not collecting the points that we needed, sometimes might not play as well but collecting the points might be more important.

The gaffer says we're on a journey with the new players, etc. and we seem to be clicking a bit more and having a bit more structure we’re not shipping as many goals, and we’re giving the lads more chances to score and they’re putting away a lot more. So fingers crossed we're on the start of an upwards trajectory."
