Haji Wright scores first City goal...

12 August 2023

The Sky Blues picked up their first three points of the season with a convincing win over Middlesbrough.

Matty Godden opened the scoring with his first league goal of the season, before Haji Wright came off the bench to score his first goal for the Club.

Then in injury time, Godden saw his cross deflected into his own net by Paddy McNair to make it three.

City had the game’s first shot on target, a bending effort from the left-hand side by Ellis Simms, who was denied by Seny Dieng in the Boro goal.

However, Dieng would be unable to keep out City for much longer as Matty Godden broke the deadlock, directing the ball into the back of the net to fire City in front.

Minutes later, on his home debut, Milan van Ewijk cut inside and drilled a low strike towards goal, but he couldn’t direct his effort on target.

City were taking the game to Michael Carrick’s side and Godden almost had a second, cutting in and forcing Dieng into a top save, before van Ewijk’s follow-up went narrowly wide.

Middlesbrough were restricted to shots from distance, whilst City were pushing for a second, going close through Simms, whose shot was saved by Dieng.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 1-0 Middlesbrough

Boro started the second half with their best chance of the game, and it was Man City loanee Morgan Rogers who raced his way through on goal but fired wide when getting his shot away.

Moments later, Sammy Silvera was played the ball across goal from Rogers and from six yards out, he sent his effort over the bar.

Mark Robins introduced Club record signing Haji Wright just after the hour mark and he doubled City’s lead five minutes later, firing home from close range for his first goal in Sky Blue.

In injury time, the lead was stretched to three when Paddy McNair put the ball into his own net from Godden’s cross into the box.

City controlled the game from then out to wrap up their first win of the season in the Championship.
