Defeat for the Sky Blues...

15 August 2023

The Sky Blues Under-21s fell to defeat in their opening Professional Development League fixture of the season against AFC Bournemouth.

Ten minutes in, Bournemouth almost found the game’s opening goal, when Max Kinsey-Wellings headed into the side netting at the back post.

City had a similar chance themselves five minutes later, but it ended in the same result, this time it was Dermi Lusala who picked out Justin Obikwu, but he couldn’t steer his header on target.

Obikwu was causing the Bournemouth defence problems, getting in behind once more, and narrowly firing wide from a tight angle.

The visitors would however take the lead in stunning fashion when Dacosta-Gonzalez found the top corner with a free-kick from around 25-yards out.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-1 AFC Bournemouth

Bournemouth came close to doubling their lead at the start of the second half, but their effort was well saved by Luke Bell.

Some good football between Evan Eghosa and Bradley Stretton opened up space for Danny Cashman from the edge of the area, but he’s shot went inches wide.

City were pushing for an equaliser and came close through Obikwu once more, but his half-volley deflected behind.

From the resulting corner, City were denied by a stunning save from Cameron Plain, after Cashman’s effort looked to be heading for the top corner.

Bournemouth wrapped up the points in injury time when Daniel Adu-Adjei ran through on goal and fired the ball past Bell.
