City are forced to settle for a point...

26 August 2023

City were held to a goalless draw at the Coventry Building Society Arena against Sunderland.

Mark Robins’ men had the better of the chances in the draw, but they were unable to break the deadlock.

The Sky Blues started the better of the two sides, dominating possession in the early exchanges, as they looked to make a breakthrough early on.

City had half chances, with the ball dropping to Kyle McFadzean, Milan van Ewijk and Matty Godden in the penalty area, but neither were clear-cut openings for Mark Robins’ side.

The best chance of the opening half hour came down left, as Jay Dasilva picked out Ben Sheaf in the middle and his shot deflected in front of Godden and he was able to divert the strike towards goal, but Anthony Patterson was able to gather.

At the other end, from a tight angle, Abdoullah Ba fired a powerful effort across the face of goal, which would go narrowly wide of Ben Wilson’s goal.

Ellis Simms was brought back into the side, and he latched onto a pinpoint through ball from Kasey Palmer and from a tight angle, was denied by the outstretched foot of Patterson.

The last opportunity of the half saw Dasilva pick up the ball in space and bending the ball towards the far corner, but he couldn’t find the target.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-0 Sunderland

Following the restart, Jack Clarke came close to finding the games opening goal for the visitors, but his shot deflected over the bar, after Joel Latibeaudiere got his body in the way.

Joel was involved in City’s first chance of the second half, finding Sheaf, who played the ball out wide to Dasilva and Jay found Palmer in the middle, he turned and fired a shot wide.

Dasilva turned provider again minutes later, picking out Godden’s head in the middle, but he glanced his effort into the hands of the Sunderland ‘keeper.

City were turning the screw and they came forward with Josh Eccles and he spotted the run of Palmer and City’s 45 held the ball up, turned his man and then looked for the bottom corner, only to be denied by Patterson once more.

Yasin Ayari and Haji Wright were introduced with 20 minutes remaining and Ayari found space around the edge of the area, teeing up Sheaf, but he struck wide.

City caught Sunderland on the break and Godden found the run of Haji Wright and through on goal, Patterson would come out on top, keeping the striker out.

With a minute left of normal time, Sunderland caught City on the break and the ball would fall to Jobe Bellingham, but Kyle McFadzean threw his body in the way to deny the midfielder.
