PREVIEW: Sky Blues travel to Stadium in the Sky Bet Championship

City face Swansea City this weekend...

18 August 2023

The Sky Blues travel to the Stadium, backed by a sold out away end this weekend.

Meet Swansea City:

The Sky Blues will arrive in Wales to take on a Swansea City side who have faced a summer of change at the Stadium.

Russell Martin swapped Swans for Saints when he completed his move to become Southampton's manager, followed by important defender Ryan Manning.

Joel Latibeaudiere also made his exit, choosing a move to the Coventry Building Society Arena, while Michael Obafemi (to Burnley), Morgan Whittaker (to Plymouth Argyle) and Oliver Ntcham (to Samsunspor) also passed through the exit door.

Swansea have recruited smartly, however, with Charlie Patino arriving on loan from Arsenal alongside his former Blackpool teammate Jerry Yates, who completed a permanent switch to Wales.

There are three players with City links for Sky Blues fans to keep an eye out for on Saturday, one of which remains a popular figure amongst Coventry supporters: Liam Walsh is still an important midfielder at Swansea and shares a link to Coventry with Nuneaton-born Josh Ginelly and City-supporting midfielder Jamie Paterson.

Thoughts of Mark Robins:

“They are a little bit different, but they’ve still got the bulk of the same players.

“They brought in Jerry Yates and one or two other players in fairness, but they brought in Jerry Yates, who, who will fight and scrap and try and run in behind, and Joel Piroe still there and, you know, for me, he's one of the top players in the division, so they've done well to hold on to him.

“They've got some talent throughout. Matt Grimes is a really good player from the deep position in midfield and they've got some good players who know this system really well.

“They will change and can flip to a different formation. They went to a back four last season and they've done similarly this season already.

“It's a good game and always a good game against them because they've got some really good footballers and tactically, it'll be it'll be really interesting.”

Mike Duff's pre-match press:

“I was at the play-off final, and they were really unlucky. Mark [Robins] has done an unbelievable job, but it goes to show you in every walk of life it takes time to implement things,” continued Duff.

“He has started to put processes and implement what it is he wants his team to look like and now you look at the whole team and when they make a signing, they look like a Mark Robins player.

“They have a clear way of playing and have made some good money from player sales but have recruited well.

“It is not a blueprint, but it is a way of doing it slowly and steadily, not just chasing the golden goose and trying to do it in two years and you’re in receivership.

“Whilst that good work has been going on, he has implemented a style of play and has been dealing with off-field problems. Sometimes that can bring you together and almost unify the playing staff.

“You look at the start they had last year, it wasn’t particularly good, but they didn’t panic. There is a belief in what they do. There are no knee-jerk reactions in that they lose a couple of games and let’s rip it up and start again. It has been proven to be successful because of the time given.”
