INTERVIEW: Marco Rus talks first team opportunities and Charlton win

The midfielder looks back after the final whistle...

29 August 2023

Midfielder Marco Rus was pleased to get another 90 minutes under his belt, after a memorable week for himself.

Rus played the full game as the Sky Blues Under-21s beat Charlton Athletic 5-2 at the Alan Higgs Centre, picking up their first win of the season.

That victory comes three days after Marco was named in the matchday squad in the Championship for the first time against Sunderland.

Rus is now looking to use those experiences to continue his progression in the Sky Blues squad moving forward this campaign.

Looking back on victory over Charlton…

“I thought it was really good performance in the team.

“Obviously our first win of the season as well and it was good to play with some of the senior players too because you learn off them every time they come down.

“They played really well for us today and I thought the younger lads were really good as well.”

Building his fitness back up…

“Since I've come back from injury I've got two 90 minutes now under my belt, which is really good.

“I was unfortunate to miss out, what I felt was a really important part of the season, pre-season, because that’s where you get going, but think I'm starting to rack up the games now, which is good for me.”

Missing pre-season training…

“It was difficult because, you miss out on certain opportunities and, you see all the lads training and you’re watching on from the physio room and it's not a nice feeling, but I'm just happy to be back now.”

Being on the bench in the league for the first team….

“It was a great moment and a great experience.

“Obviously, it's what you work towards you whole life really, so to be around the first team I’m just very grateful.

“I had the experience to be up there and hopefully, there'll be a few more times where I could be.

“I hope I can be here with the first time as much as I can. That’s the aim for me now to push on and then crack on with.”

Experiences training with the first team…

“Yeah, I mean you’re training with some unbelievable players that are of a top quality and learning off them every day is just amazing.

“You can't replicate that knowledge that they have and It's just unbelievable.”
