INTERVIEW: Liam Kelly previews Sunday's trip to Leicester

City head to the King Power...

4 August 2023

Sky Blues captain Liam Kelly is looking forward to the season opener against Leicester City this weekend.

City travel up the M69 to face the Foxes in their first fixtures of the new 2023/24 Championship season.

The Sky Blues have been busy in the transfer mark, recruiting eight new faces ahead of the season opener.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Kelly spoke about how those new players have settled in and the excitement in the group for the new season starting.

Pre-season feeling different…

“Different in terms of it being shorter.

“There’s been a big turnaround than what there had been in the last few seasons. A lot of players were out of contract.

“The Club has brought in a lot of new players as well, so it’s been different but at the same time we’re ready for the season to start.

“Pre-season games have gone well and were just looking forward to Sunday and getting the season up and running again.”

New signings gelling in…

“All the boys that have come on board have been fantastic. They’ve blended in really well and they got minutes on the pitch in pre-season.

“Everyone plays a part in introducing new players into the team and the hope is when they come in they benefit the team and us getting results on a weekend, as well as making new friendships along the way.”

Facing Leicester City…

“It’s going to be a good occasion.

“I’m sure all the Coventry fans are excited for the match Sunday. It’s going to be a tough game. Leicester have been a Premier League side for a number of years.

“They won the Premier League not so long ago, so it will be an interesting game.

“They still have plenty of quality in their squad and they will be looking to bounce back to the Premier League at first attempt.

“For us, we will be looking to put ourselves in that position to come the end of the season, but first and foremost we need to focus on the game and try and put in a good performance and try and bring something back to Coventry.”

Supporters at Leicester…

“There will be a good crowd with a good following.

“We want to try and test ourselves against some the best teams in the league and no doubt Leicester will be on of the favorites to get promoted, but we’re confident in ourselves and what we managed to achieve last season and we will be looking to hit the ground running come Sunday.”

Expectations for the new season…

“Theres’s expectations every year I’ve been at Coventry. You want to do better than you did the following year and every year we’ve managed to do that.

“It’s a good pressure to have and you need pressure to go out and perform and to keep improving year on year.

“We want to embrace that challenge and the pressure it brings and let’s go and have a successful season.”
