INTERVIEW: John Dempster looks back at first win of season and match minutes for players

First win of the season for the Under-21s...

29 August 2023

Sky Blues Under-21s Head Coach, John Dempster was pleased with what he saw as his side picked up their first win of the season.

The development side, which was joined by Brad Collins, Luis Binks, Jake Bidwell and Liam Kelly, ran rampant against Charlton at the Alan Higgs Centre, as the Addicks were hit for five.

That was City’s first win of the season in the Professional Development League and speaking after the final whistle, Dempster was happy with what he saw.

Analysing the performance against Charlton…

“It was a real positive afternoon. Some senior players got some valuable minutes in the tank and some of the less experienced players got to play alongside them.

“A large percentage of the game, some of the combination play and in possession stuff first half was excellent.

“Our reaction to win the ball back was very fast and intense, so we’re really pleased with the whole thing really from start to finish, even though we got a little bit sloppy towards the end.

“There were some tired bodies out there and when the senior boys came off, it's obviously going to make a difference.

“There's a few of those lads that still need to get their fitness up in terms of match minutes, which again, we got out of today and there were some really good individual performances.”

Looking back at the five goals scored…

“There were some good goals. A couple of set plays some really good individual goals and combination play and I think Bradley Stretton’s goal was the pick of the bunch.

“Justin Obikwu got the scoring underway with a really smart finish and that really set the tone for the day going forward.

“Then Danny Cashman scored a really good goal to put the game to bed in the end and then it was good to see Luis Binks find the back of the net.”

Disappointed with the goals conceded…

“We were really pleased with the attacking play, but to concede from a set play in the penalty was disappointing and something we will need to look at, but overall, it was a pleasant afternoon.”

Getting the first win of the season…

“I’m pleased to get the first one.

“I mean, we were very disappointed not to get anything against QPR last week having played so well in the game, not secured against fast game.

“But we're all going to get up to speed over the next month or so, so looking back on today it was a good performance and a good win.”
