INTERVIEW: Ben Sheaf gives his reaction to Middlesbrough win

The midfielder played a vital role...

12 August 2023

Ben Sheaf was delighted after the Sky Blues recorded their first win of the season against Middlesbrough.

Sheaf was named Sky's Man of the Match after the final whistle, following a dominant performance in the middle of the park.

Speaking after the final whistle, Sheaf analaysed the win and looked to build on the victory over Boro.

On the 3-0 win…

“A fairly good performance and I thought we deserved the win over the course of the game.

“We were good in spells but there is still loads to work on. We are still a new group so we are still getting to know each other.

“Today was the right way forward especially after the result last week. Today was an enjoyable one.”

Matty Godden’s form…

“Matty has been here so many years, he has been a great servant to the club and when he is at it, he is as good as anyone in the division.

“He sets the tone up there, presses from the front and the new lads have been fantastic so far but they can all learn from Matty for sure.”

Haji Wright’s goal…

“As a striker you want to get off the mark as quick as you can and he came on and did really well.

“He was a threat, he held the ball up and I am really glad he got his goal.”

Middlesbrough’s threat after half-time…

“Obviously we were one up so they were going to tweak things and change thinks a little bit. We need to be harder to play against.

“The chances they had, we kind of gave it to them a little, so we need to be better defensively. Like I said it is a new group and we are only going to get better I think.”

Gustavo Hamer leaving…

“Gus is a top player and a top person. We loved having him around and he did fantastic for us, especially last year. He deserves what he got. It is nice but we have to move on.

“It is all about finding new partnerships. I really enjoyed playing with Josh (Eccles) and it is about building relationships all over the pitch. The more we play with each other the better we will get!”

Stepping up following the summer departures…

“It has got to be a collective thing. Everyone has got to step up and take on the responsibility as well, score more goals, get some assists.

“I need to keep on doing what I am doing and step up, keep trying to improve.

“Vik and Gus were massive parts of our success last season, so it is time for others to take on that responsibility and show off what we can do.”

His goalscoring…

“Goals are nice but performances are the main thing. Good performances come good results.

“But definitely, goals are something I need to add to my game, I just need to get into the right positions and have a calm head. If I can add goals, that would be fantastic.”

Kai Andrews gaining confidence from today…

“He has come in at the start of this pre-season and trained really well. He is a good lad and he deserves his chance.

“He trained well this week and the gaffer is not going to hand out starts and opportunities to anyone so he must obviously have good quality. He just need to get his head down and kick on.”
