COMMUNITY: The Dave Bennett Walking Football Community Cup

29 August 2023

Sky Blues in the Community was thrilled to announce the introduction of our first “Dave Bennett” Walking Football tournament earlier this month.

Named after Sky Blues FA Cup winning legend and now SBitC coach Bennett, we had teams representing Leicester City in the Community coming up against our SBitC Rugby Borough side, Coventry Sphinx and Macmillan cancer support groups. All were in good spirits, taking part in a fantastic day, with SBitC Rugby team just beating Macmillan on penalties in the final.

Dennis Zuill – SBitC WF lead coach commented: "It’s been a fantastic day. Walking Football is a modified version of the beautiful game that caters to individuals who may have physical limitations or prefer a less intense form of exercise. This inclusive sport promotes fitness, social interaction, and a sense of camaraderie among participants."

The concept of Walking Football is simple, yet incredibly impactful. It allows people of all ages, fitness levels and abilities to engage in a sport they love without feeling excluded. By reducing the speed of the game and eliminating running, players can enjoy the essence of football while putting less strain on their bodies.

Aside from the obvious health benefits, Walking Football also offers a platform for individuals to connect with their peers and form lasting friendships. It’s a fantastic social activity that brings people together and fosters a sense of belonging within the community. The game is played with mutual respect, encouraging fair play and teamwork, which further strengthens the bonds between participants.

Zuill added: "We firmly believe that since introducing Walking Football to our community, it’s not only had a positive impact on the physical and mental well-being of our participant, but also enhance the sense of unity and togetherness that is so important in any locality. Together, we create an environment that promotes healthy lifestyles, inclusivity, and strong community ties.”
