Defeat for City...

1 April 2023

The Sky Blues suffered defeat against Stoke City at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The visitors would take the lead inside the first five minutes, when Tyrese Campbell saw his cross turned in by Jacob Brown at the back post.

City looked for an immediate response and they almost had that when Fankaty Dabo saw his cross met by the head of Matty Godden, but Jack Bonham in the Stoke goal was quick off his line to deny the striker.

At the other end, Ben Wilson was called into action, denying Brown a second goal, getting to his feet to shut down the striker’s angle.

The City ‘keeper then produced an outstanding stop when it looked for all the world that Will Smallbone was going to fire in, Wilson performed a heroic save.

An attack down the right for Stoke saw Brown beat his man, before picking out Nick Powell in the area, but the midfielder’s effort went behind for a goal kick.

The visitors would eventually double their lead just before the break, when Tyrese Campbell beat the offside trap and slotted the ball past Wilson.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 0-2 Stoke City

Mark Robins made three changes at the break with Josh Wilson-Esbrand, Michael Rose and Ryan Howley coming on for the Sky Blues.

City had the first chance of the second half when Hamer tried to beat Bonham from distance with a free-kick, but his effort went over the bar.

Viktor Gyökeres came inches away from pulling one back, but his outside of the boot volley was saved superbly by Bonham.

City were enjoying the majority of possession in the second half and again came close to finding the back of the net, this time Fankaty Dabo cut inside, but his effort curled wide of goal.

Shots were raining down on the Stoke goal, with Matty Godden being denied from close range and then Gyökeres forcing Bonham into a save from distance.

Next to try his luck was Ben Sheaf, as the midfielder skipped past his man, but his shot was held onto from inside of the area.

City continued to push and push and were once again denied by Stoke ‘keeper Jack Bonham, who this time flew across his line to prevent Gyökeres finding the back of the net.

However, the Sky Blues were caught on the break and the visitors added a third through Will Smallbone, who fired in from the edge of the box.

Stoke made it four five minutes later when Ki-Jana Hoever cut in from the right and fired the ball into the back of the net.
