City climb into the play-off places...

22 April 2023

City climbed into the play-off places with victory over Reading at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

Matty Godden put City in front just before the break, before Lucas Joao fired the Royals level following the restart.

However, that lead only lasted a few minutes as Gustavo Hamer put Mark Robins’ men back in the lead, with the goal that proved to be the winner.

The Sky Blues started the game on the front foot and had the games opening chance. This came when Gustavo Hamer picked out Liam Kelly on the edge of the area and he rolled the ball into Viktor Gyokeres and the Swede got a shot away, but his effort went narrowly wide.

Viktor was causing the visitors all sorts of problems and was finding space in behind their backline, forcing Lumley into a smart stop at his near post.

A few moments later, Hamer picked out the run of Gyokeres and again, despite trying to take it round the Reading ‘keeper, it was Lumley who came out on top, denying the Swede once more.

However, he was unable to prevent City finding the breakthrough just after the half-hour mark, when Josh Eccles’ ball into the box eventually broke to Matty Godden on the volley and he found the bottom corner, making it 1-0.

Before the break, Ben Wilson was called into action for the first time, watching on as he claimed Tom Holmes’ header from a corner.

City almost doubled their lead with seconds left on the clock, but Viktor Gyokeres was denied by the woodwork.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 1-0 Reading

Five minutes after the restart, the visitors were level and it was Lucas Joao who fired in from 20 yards out, leaving Wilson with no chance.

However, the scores would stay level for just two minutes as Hamer was able to find his way through the middle, before seeing the ball break to him again and he sent Lumley the wrong way.

Reading’s scorer, Lucas Joao, has the visitors best chance to equalise when he headed over the bar from ten yards out, after getting on the end of Guiness-Walker’s cross.

City were looking to double their lead and Hamer was after a second, but he couldn’t steer a half-volley from outside of the area on target.

The midfielder had an even better opportunity minutes later, as he found himself through on goal, but with just Lumley to beat, Reading’s number one came out on top and made the save.

City continued to look to put the game to bed and they almost did when Hamer latched onto a loose ball in the middle, finding Gyokeres in the middle, but the Swede fired wide.
