REPORT: Sky Blues 3-2 Alvechurch

City book their place in the final...

12 April 2023

The Sky Blues booked their place in the Birmingham Senior Cup final, with victory over Alvechurch at the CBS Arena.

Tristen Batwni opened the scoring before quick fire goals from Justin Obiwku and Danny Cashman took the game away from the visitors.

Alvechurch did pull two back late on, but they were unable to come from behind.

It was the visitors who went closest to opening the scoring, as a shot from distance by Danny Waldron deflected narrowly wide of goal.

Alvechurch would be left to rue that missed opportunity as just moments later, the Sky Blues would take the lead through their first attack.

A ball down the right-hand-side was latched onto by Justin Obikwu and he picked out the run of Tristen Batanwi, who took a touch, before firing past Dan Jezeph.

City pushed for a second and they were being frustrated by the Alvechurch defence, who threw their bodies in the way to deny Harrison Nee and then Marco Rus.

At the other end, Luke Bell was called into action, producing a sensational save to deny Edge, who looked to lift the ball over the ‘keeper inside of the area, but Bell managed to tip the ball onto the bar.

Bell then ensured the Sky Blues would lead at the break, getting down low to his left to keep out Jed Abbey from close range.

HALF-TIME: Sky Blues 1-0 Alvechurch

City came out of the traps in the second half, and they doubled their lead inside the opening minute of the second period.

Tristen Batanwi turned provider, picking out Justin Obikwu in the area and he took a touch before firing past Jezeph in the Alvechurch goal.

Batanwi would get his second assist of the game just a few minutes later, latching onto a loose pass and then squaring the ball across goal for Danny Cashman and he had the simple job of rolling the ball into the empty net.

The hosts first opening of the second 45 minutes fell to fullback Ben Cassidy at the back post, but he couldn’t steer his strike on target, dragging his shot wide.

Alvechurch did get their goal 15 minutes from time and it was a well-hit strike on the half-volley from Jamie Soule, which left Bell with no chance.

The City shot-stopper was finding himself busy in the final ten minutes, this time producing a stop from close range to keep out Harry Williams.

Alvechurch did pull another one back late on from the spot, but it would prove to be nothing more than a consolation, as City progressed to the final.
